Room 412, and the Conference Ends Tomorrow

Two beds. That is the thing she noticed on Monday and has noticed every night since, and it is not a complaint, it is just that a room with two beds and one person in it is a particular kind of arithmetic.

Room 412. Third night. Her lanyard is on the desk with a folded agenda under it and there is a bag on the second bed with three days of clothes on top of it that she has not put away because there is no point now.

It has been a good conference. She wants that on the record.

She has known a lot of these people for years and they are her sort of people, and there was a session on Tuesday that genuinely changed how she is going to do a piece of her job, and she had dinner both nights with a group that included two women she is very fond of and one man who is extremely funny, and she laughed properly, more than once, and did not want to leave the table.

And it is ten o'clock on the third night and she is sitting on the end of the bed with her shoes off and she is not tired yet.

And there is a hunger in her that four good days did not touch, and here is the part she has finally admitted this evening: she has known about it for years.

Not vaguely. Specifically. She could tell you roughly when she became aware of it, and she could list about a dozen occasions on which she has noticed it clearly, and the list includes several of the best days of her life, which is the detail that has always confused her most.

And in all that time she has never once brought it anywhere. Not to a friend, not to a counselor, not to God in any form she would call bringing it. She has noticed it, and set it down, and got on with things, and got on with things very well.

And you know that room. There is a hunger in you that has nothing to do with wanting company, and you have known about it for years, and you have never taken it to anybody.

So take this in before we go a step further. You are not broken and there is nothing wrong with you for sitting here at ten o'clock. Psalm 62:8 says trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us, and pour out is a physical word about emptying a container, and the Holy Spirit is in room 412 with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The last invitation, issued four times

The Bible ends with an invitation, and the striking thing about it is how many times one short verse issues it.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.Revelation 22:17

Count them. Four.

The Spirit and the bride say come. Then whoever hears is told to say come. Then anyone who is thirsty is told to come. And then, in case any of the three has left somebody out, whosoever will, let him take, freely.

Nobody writes a sentence like that by accident. That is a verse built by somebody who knew exactly how a person under long-standing hesitation reads an invitation, which is that they look for the clause that excludes them. So he closes them all. Four times over, from four directions, ending with whosoever and freely, which are the two widest words available.

And notice the qualification in the third clause. Him that is athirst. Not: him that has understood his thirst. Not: him that can name it. Not him that has been thirsty for an acceptable length of time or in an acceptable way.

Athirst is the whole condition, and it is a condition you have met continuously for years.

You have met the only qualification named, and you have been meeting it the entire time. The written word issues the same invitation four times in one verse and ends with whosoever and freely, which means the clause you have been half-looking for is not in there; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into room 412 on the third night.

And notice who issues the first one. The Spirit and the bride. The invitation opens from His side, before anybody thirsty has said a word.

Years of noticing and setting down

I want to name what has actually happened over those years, because you have not done anything wrong and you are about to be tempted to think you have wasted them.

You noticed something, repeatedly, and each time you set it down and carried on. And carrying on was not avoidance; it was Tuesday. There were things to do and people depending on you and a job you are good at, and a woman who stopped every time she noticed an unnamed hunger would not have built the life you have built.

The trouble is not that you set it down. The trouble is that the setting down became so smooth that it stopped registering as a decision, and a thing that has been noticed and shelved a dozen times without ever once being said out loud eventually acquires the status of scenery.

You were not avoiding it, and setting it down was the only thing the days ever allowed. Psalm 34:10 says they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing, and the seeking is described as an ordinary continuing posture rather than a crisis measure; His Spirit is the one who does the answering, and He is not counting the years you did not bring it.

And here is the second half, and I am going to be exact. I am not going to tell you what this hunger is about. I do not know. I do not know what your life has held or what you have wanted or what you have not got, and a stranger writing at a distance who starts explaining a woman to herself off five paragraphs is doing something presumptuous and there is far too much of it about.

What is true is that it is real, that noticing it a dozen times is not the same as bringing it once, and that it does not have to be understood before it can be met.

You are not being asked to define it, and no definition is required before the water. Isaiah 55:1 says come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price, and the entire transaction is priced at nothing; the same Spirit who had that written is the one who has been in every room where you noticed this and set it down.

Tonight, and not because it is special

Here is why tonight, and it is not because a hotel room is spiritually significant.

It is because you are alone, and not tired, and there is nothing scheduled, and nobody in this building needs anything from you, and the conference ends tomorrow and normal life starts again on Friday.

That is a rare combination. In the ordinary week the noticing gets set down because there is something to do in the next four minutes. Tonight there is nothing in the next four minutes. Room 412 is not holy, but it is empty and it is quiet and you are in it and there is no reason to put this down again except habit.

And the habit is twelve years old and has never been examined and is the only thing between you and saying a sentence out loud.

You have the conditions and the invitation and nothing scheduled, and that is enough for tonight. Scripture says let him that is athirst come, and the coming is the whole of what is asked; the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you sitting on the end of that bed with your shoes off and not tired yet.

So room 412 is not a lonely room. It is a room with two beds and one person and a lanyard on the desk, and a hunger that has been known about for years and has never been anywhere, and a night with nothing after it.
