The Counselor Who Hears Everyone

This message is for the counselor who has heard the most private things in about four hundred people's lives and has never told anybody one of her own, who noticed on a Friday that she has professionalized a habit she had at nineteen, and who has no idea how to be on the other side of a room she has sat in for twenty-two years

Friday, ten past five, and the last one left at four, and she is still in the room.

Two armchairs at an angle rather than facing, which she arranged that way about fifteen years ago and has never changed. A box of tissues that is never quite in the middle of the table. A window with the blind at a height she chose. A clock positioned so that she can see it and the other chair cannot.

Twenty-two years. She has not counted the people and would not, but if you pushed her she would guess something over four hundred.

And she has been sitting here since four working out something she noticed halfway through the last appointment and could not attend to at the time.

She has heard the most private thing in four hundred lives.

Not a version of it. The actual thing. The one that person has told nobody, in some cases ever, in some cases for forty years. She has heard four hundred of those, and held every one, and not one of them has ever gone anywhere,.

And nobody has ever heard one of hers.

Not her husband, who knows a great deal and does not know that. Not her supervisor, who she is honest with about her work in a way that is genuinely honest and is still about her work. Not her sister. Not the woman she trained with in the nineties who is the closest thing she has to a peer.

And what she noticed halfway through the last appointment, and has been sitting with for seventy minutes, is that this is not a professional posture at all.

It is a habit she had at nineteen. She can date it. She was doing this before she had any training, in a family that ran on it, and then she went and got qualified in it, and the qualification put a name on it and a code of ethics around it and a room and two chairs at an angle, and for twenty-two years she has been paid to do the thing she would have done anyway.

She is very good at it and it is genuinely good work and four hundred people are better off. And it started as something else.

And you know that room. You would rather be looked at than known, or in your case not even looked at, simply useful, and you have built something excellent on top of something you were doing at nineteen, and nobody has ever had cause to look under it, least of all you.

So take this in before we go a step further. You are not a fraud and twenty-two years of that work was not a cover. Psalm 139:1 says O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me, and it is finished and it is thorough, and the Holy Spirit is in this room with you.

The Counselor Who Hears Everyone

What the seal says first

There is an image in Paul's second letter to Timothy that is easy to read past, and the order of the two halves is the whole thing.

He is writing about people whose faith has come apart, and about the damage that does to everybody watching, and then he says this.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his, and, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.2 Timothy 2:19

A foundation with a seal on it, and the seal has two inscriptions, and the first one is: the Lord knoweth them that are his.

That is what is written on the bottom of everything. Not a description of what the people are like. Not a summary of what they have done. Not even, first, an instruction about how they should live, though that comes second and is real.

The first thing carved into the foundation is a statement about God's knowledge of the people standing on it.

And it is worth sitting with why he puts that first, in a passage about people falling apart. Because the thing under everything, when the visible situation is unstable, is not what anybody can see. It is that He knows which ones are His, and that knowing is what holds when nothing observable is holding.

You are one of the ones He knows, and that is what is written on the bottom of everything. The written word puts the knowing on the foundation before it puts any instruction there, which means it is bearing the load rather than describing an outcome; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into a counseling room at ten past five on a Friday.

And notice the pronoun. Them that are his. It is possessive and it is not about performance, and Paul writes it in a passage where he has just named two people by name who went wrong.

The room has one door and it opens one way

I want to be precise about the mechanism, because you have half seen it and the exact shape of it is worth having.

That room is not neutral, and neither is the furniture. Two chairs at an angle rather than facing, a clock you can see and they cannot, a fifty-minute frame you control both ends of, and an ethical structure that makes it wrong for you to bring your own material into it.

Every single one of those is correct. You did not build a hiding place; you built a room that is fit for purpose and the purpose requires exactly those features. Anybody who arranged it differently would be doing worse work.

But the effect of an entirely correct room, occupied for twenty-two years, four days a week, is a person who has spent tens of thousands of hours in a setting where the traffic is structurally one-directional, and where her own material is professionally excluded, and where that exclusion is not a personal choice but an obligation.

You have been in the only room in the world where being unknown is the ethical requirement.

You were not hiding, and the room you built is right and does exactly this to whoever sits in it. 2 Timothy 2:19 puts the Lord's knowing as the thing that stands sure when everything visible is not standing, and it is stated as a property of Him rather than an achievement of anybody; His Spirit is the one doing that knowing, and He is not evaluating your practice.

And here is the second half, and I am going to be careful because this is the last thing this whole site says to anybody.

Nothing on this page will tell you what to disclose, or to whom, or that it should be your husband or your supervisor or the woman you trained with. You know your life and that profession better than any page could, and both the thing and the person are yours to choose and stay yours.

You are choosing both the what and the whom, and no page and no code gets a vote. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says two are better than one, and it names a number rather than a candidate; the same Spirit who had that written is the one who has been in that room for twenty-two years of Fridays.

The other chair is not available to you here

Here is the practical thing, and it is not a small ask, and I am not going to pretend it is.

The other chair in that room is not available to you. Not with a client, obviously. Not with a supervisor, because that relationship is about your work and is correct as it is. Not by rearranging anything in the practice.

Which means the thing you need does not exist anywhere in your professional life, at all, by design, and cannot be produced there.

It has to be arranged somewhere else entirely, with somebody outside the whole structure, and it has to be arranged on purpose, because your instinct in any room, honed for twenty-two years and running since you were nineteen, will be to turn the attention around within about ninety seconds. You will do it without deciding to. You have done it in every social situation you have been in for two decades.

So it needs a person who will not let you, or a person you have told in advance that you are going to try to.

You are able to arrange what the room cannot supply, and it will not happen by accident. Scripture says the Lord knoweth them that are his, and it is the first thing on the foundation rather than the last; the Holy Spirit is the one who kept you in that chair for seventy minutes after the last appointment.

So the room is not a place where you have been concealed. It is a correct room, arranged properly, in which four hundred people have said the truest thing they know. And there is a chair in it that is not for you, and there was never going to be, and what you need is in a different building.

And one plain thing. If what you are holding is heavier than a page can carry, find a real person this week. If it has gone darker than tired, call or text 988.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this room. You discovered at four o'clock that a professional posture is actually a nineteen-year-old's habit with a qualification on top of it, and the discovery feels like being found out. It is not being found out. The work is real, the four hundred are genuinely better off, and the room is arranged correctly. Two true things are sitting on top of each other and only one of them is a problem, and it is not the one with the certificate.

You are known by the One whose knowing is written on the bottom of everything, right now, as you read this. It is written the Lord knoweth them that are his, and it is the first inscription on a foundation described as standing sure while everything visible comes apart; His Spirit is the one who has been in that room for twenty-two years without ever once needing you to be useful.

So the room is right and the chairs stay at an angle and the clock stays where it is. And what you need is not in this building and was never going to be, and it can be arranged, deliberately, somewhere else, with one person you have chosen.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in that room before you lock up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from in this chair; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because twenty-two years of correct work has kept you unknown. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the knowing in it. How it is received is His to decide, and He is kind about it.

  1. Habit I had at nineteen that I later got qualified in, you are underneath twenty-two years of genuinely good work and you are not the same thing as that work, and I am not going to let one hide the other. It is written that the Lord knoweth them that are His, and that is the first thing carved into the foundation.
  2. Instinct that turns the attention around inside ninety seconds in any room I enter, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. Scripture says two are better than one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who arranges what a room cannot supply, so I am telling somebody in advance what I am going to try to do.
  3. Lord, You put Your knowing of Your own underneath everything as the thing that holds when nothing visible is holding. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been in this room for twenty-two years without once needing me to be useful, and I am choosing one person outside this building and one true thing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
