A Renewed Mind1 Corinthians 2:16

Carrel Fourteen on the Third Floor

This message is for the graduate student in a library carrel who has something surface between two footnotes and immediately begins analyzing it, because analysis is the one skill he has and he has been turning it on himself for six years, and who has never once considered that understanding a thing is not the same as being free of it

Third floor, north side, the fourteenth carrel along, and he has had it since September because nobody else wants the one under the vent.

It is a good desk. Two hundred and forty pages of a dissertation have come out of it. He knows exactly which shelf he can reach without standing up, and he knows the sound the heating makes at about four, and he has a way of stacking things that means he can find any article he has read in the last two years in under a minute.

He is very good at this. That is not immodest, it is just true. He can take an argument apart, find the weak joint, name what somebody is doing three moves before they do it, and construct a case that will survive a hostile committee. It is the one thing he has always been able to do and he has been paid, in one form or another, for six years to do it.

And on a Tuesday afternoon, between two footnotes, something surfaces.

We are not going to describe it and I am not going to ask you what yours is. It surfaces, sideways and complete and from nowhere, at about four in the afternoon, in a carrel under a vent, with a citation half typed.

And he does what he does.

He starts analyzing. Where did that come from. What triggered it, was it the passage, was it the hour, was it the fact that he skipped lunch. What is the pattern across the last month, and is the frequency rising or is he only noticing more. What does the literature say. What would he say to somebody else about it. What does it indicate about the state of a person that this is what appears when the attention slackens.

He is thorough. He is always thorough. He can give you a genuinely sophisticated account of his own condition, better than most people could give of theirs, and he has been refining it for six years.

And it has never once helped.

That is the thing he has never permitted himself to write down. Six years of the best analytical mind he has, turned on this, and he understands it beautifully and he is not one inch further out.

And you know that carrel. Something arrives that you did not choose, and you reach for the one tool you trust, and the tool is a good tool, and it does not do this job, and because it does not do this job you conclude you have not used it well enough yet.

So take this in before we go one step further, because it is nearly five. You are not going to think your way out and it is not because you have thought badly. Psalm 139:17 says how precious are His thoughts toward you and how great is the sum of them, which puts the important thinking on His side of the desk, and the Holy Spirit is in carrel fourteen with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

Carrel Fourteen on the Third Floor

The sentence does not end with a method

There is a passage in the first Corinthian letter about what the natural mind can and cannot reach, and it ends with a clause that is not the kind of clause anybody expects.

Paul has been building a case that the deep things of God are not available to unaided human reasoning, that they are searched out by the Spirit, and that a person operating on natural equipment alone will find the whole business foolish. Then he quotes Isaiah, asking who has known the mind of the Lord, which is a rhetorical question with an obvious answer of nobody. And then he ends it like this.

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.1 Corinthians 2:16

But we have. Not: but we may attain. Not: but we can develop. Not: here is the method by which a rigorous person may come to know. The argument about the limits of natural reasoning ends in a possession, and the possession is in the present tense and it is already held.

For a man who has spent six years trying to reach something by thinking, that is a stranger sentence than it looks. The passage is not offering him a better technique. It is telling him that the thing he has been trying to construct was issued to him.

You have the mind of Christ, and it was given rather than reached. The written word ends an argument about the failure of unaided reasoning with a clause in the perfect present, which means it is a holding and not a project; and the Holy Spirit is the one who searches the deep things and does the carrying, in a carrel, at four in the afternoon, under a vent.

And notice what the passage does not do. It does not insult the mind. Paul is a formidably rigorous man writing a tightly constructed argument. He is not against thinking. He is saying that one particular door does not open with that key.

Understanding is not the same as freedom

I want to name the mistake precisely, because you will respect a precise statement more than a warm one.

You have been treating comprehension as the mechanism of release. The implicit model is: if I understand it well enough, it will lose its hold, and therefore any continuing hold is evidence of incomplete understanding, which calls for further analysis.

That model is unfalsifiable, and you would spot it in four seconds in somebody else's dissertation. There is no possible observation that would count against it. Every failure feeds it. That is not a theory, it is a loop, and you have been running it for six years with a first-class mind, which is precisely why it has held together so well.

You were not sloppy and the loop is airtight, which is exactly the problem with it. Isaiah 55:9 says His ways are higher than your ways and His thoughts than your thoughts, and the comparison is one of category rather than of degree, which means more of the same effort was never going to close the distance; His Spirit is the one who bridges it, at whatever pace He keeps, and He is not marking your work.

And there is a second half that deserves saying to somebody who lives in his head. Analysis has been more than a method for you. It has been the place you go when something is wrong, because it is the one room in the world where you are competent and in control. Turning it on this is not a mistake in judgment. It is a man going to the only room he trusts.

You are not being asked to stop thinking, and nobody is telling you your training is a liability. Psalm 40:2 says He brought me up out of the pit and set my feet upon a rock and established my goings, and every verb in it is done to a person who was in the pit; the same Spirit doing that establishing is the one who has kept you at that desk for six years and got two hundred and forty pages out of you.

And if what surfaces at four in the afternoon is heavier than a page can hold, do not carry it alone in a carrel. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you do not have to be rigorous in front of.

A citation, not an argument

Here is the practical part, and I am going to put it in terms you will accept.

What you do when it surfaces should not be an argument, because you will win the argument and remain exactly where you are. What you do should be a citation.

An argument is constructed under pressure and its quality varies with your state, which is why yours has never held at four in the afternoon. A citation is a fixed text, written down beforehand, read out, and its authority does not depend on the condition of the person reading it. That is the entire reason a court reads a ruling aloud rather than reasoning its way to it again each time.

So you write one line, now, in a state where you are competent, and when it surfaces you do not think, you cite.

You are able to hold a text you did not have to compose in the moment, and that is all this asks. Scripture says but we have the mind of Christ, and a clause like that can be read out by a tired man in a carrel with a citation half typed; the Holy Spirit is the one who put this page under your eyes at an hour when nothing is currently surfacing and you can write calmly.

So carrel fourteen is not a laboratory for the study of yourself. It is a good desk under a vent with two hundred and forty pages behind it, and something surfaced there once and is not a research question.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this carrel. You built an unfalsifiable model in which continuing difficulty always proves insufficient understanding, and then you served it faithfully with a very good mind for six years. The model is the trap. Understanding is not the mechanism of release, it never was, and the thing you have been trying to construct through analysis was handed to you before you started the dissertation.

You have the mind of Christ, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that we have the mind of Christ, and the clause sits at the end of an argument about everything unaided reasoning cannot reach; His Spirit is the one searching the deep things while you sit at a desk under a vent with a footnote half typed.

So the loop is closed, not by winning it, but by noticing that it was never a question with an answer at the end. And it is nearly five, and there are two hundred and forty pages behind you, and that is genuinely good work.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, quietly is fine, but out loud. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own mind; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because something arrived between two footnotes. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the searching in it, never the strength of your own reasoning. Whether the arrivals get further apart is His to decide, and He is kind about the pace and He is not marking you on it.

  1. Loop that says continuing difficulty proves I have not understood it well enough yet, you are unfalsifiable and you are not a theory, and I would have caught you in anybody else's work in four seconds. It is written that we have the mind of Christ, and I am not opening a case on this at four in the afternoon.
  2. Habit of going to the one room where I am competent every time something is wrong, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God says He brought me up out of the pit and established my goings, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that establishing, so I am not digging and I am being lifted.
  3. Lord, You are the God whose thoughts toward me are past counting, and You ended the whole argument with a possession rather than a method. I thank You, because Your Spirit searches what I was never going to reach from a desk, and I have one line written on a card in the front of this book before I need it.
