Chair Three, Three Days After

She booked it three weeks ago, before any of this, for a wedding she is going to next Saturday.

Chair three. Ten fifteen on a Saturday morning. The place is full and loud and smells the way these places smell, and there is a television on with the sound off that nobody is watching, and two women near the front are having a conversation about a landlord that the whole room is enjoying.

She found out on Wednesday.

She thought about canceling. She sat with her phone on Thursday night and could not produce a reason that would not require a follow-up question, and the thought of a follow-up question from anybody about anything was more than she could face, so she came.

And she is fine. She has been fine since Wednesday. She has made two dinners and gone to work and answered her mother's phone call and been completely fine, and she has not cried once, and she had begun to wonder about that.

And then the young woman doing her nails, who is about twenty-three and who she has never met before, takes her hands.

That is all. She takes both of her hands, the way they do, to look at them and turn them over, and holds them for a second longer than the work requires, and says: your hands are cold, honey, let me warm them up.

And it starts.

Not loudly. She is not sobbing in a salon on a Saturday morning. But it is running down her face and she cannot make it stop, and the young woman does not say anything at all, and does not let go of her hands, and after a while reaches over with one hand and gets a tissue and puts it on the counter and keeps working.

Three days of fine. And a stranger held her hands and it was over in four seconds.

And you know that chair. You found out about somebody you love and you have been managing beautifully, and then something small and kind came at you sideways and took the whole thing down, and you have been trying to work out ever since what that says about you.

So take this in before we go a step further. You are not falling apart and that was not weakness in a salon chair. Psalm 56:8 says He puts your tears into His bottle, which means somebody was already collecting what a room full of women did not see, and the Holy Spirit is in this room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

Called alongside

There is an opening to a letter that names God in a way He is named nowhere else, and the word underneath it is the reason this article can be written.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble.2 Corinthians 1:3-4

The word behind comfort is not a soft word. It does not mean soothing and it does not mean consoling. Broken open, it means called to the side of. Summoned to be next to somebody.

And here is the thing that makes it land. It is the same root as the name Jesus uses for the Holy Spirit, the one usually rendered Comforter or Helper. The One called alongside.

So the God of all comfort is not primarily a God who makes you feel better. He is a God who comes and stands next to a person. That is what the word says. And the difference matters enormously on day three, because feeling better is not available to you this week and being stood next to is.

You are being stood beside by a God whose actual name for this includes the coming. The written word uses a word meaning called to the side of rather than a word about soothing, which means the comfort on offer is presence and not an improvement in how you feel; and the Holy Spirit is the one who was called alongside, in chair three, on a Saturday morning, at ten fifteen.

And notice what the passage says the comfort is for. That we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble. It moves. What is done to you is described, in the same sentence, as equipment for somebody else, which is not a demand and is not a debt. It is a description of how this particular thing travels.

Why the kindness got through and the days did not

I want to explain what happened in that chair, because you have been reading it as a collapse and it was not.

For three days you have been managing, and managing works by keeping everything at a certain distance. Dinners, work, your mother's phone call: all of it handled from behind glass. That is not fakery, it is how a person stays functional in the first days, and you did it well.

And then somebody touched your hands.

Touch does not go through the glass, it goes under it. A kind word you can field. A question you can answer. Two hands taking yours and somebody saying they are cold arrives at a place that has no defenses on it because nobody expects to need them at a nail salon on a Saturday.

So what happened was not that you broke. It is that something got in, and it got in because it came in under the wall rather than at it, and that is what kindness does and it is the only thing that does it.

You were not overcome, and what happened was something reaching you rather than something failing in you. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, and both halves are about what He declines to do to somebody barely holding; His Spirit is doing that at whatever pace He keeps, and He is not evaluating how long you held out.

And here is the second half, and I will be exact. Nothing on this page is going to tell you what to do about the person you found out about. Not stay, not leave, not forgive by a date, not confront anybody before the wedding next Saturday. That belongs to you and to God and to as long as it takes, and a stranger handing a woman a course of action three days in would be careless with a life.

You are not being instructed here, and nobody has the standing to set your dates. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and it reports where He already is rather than what a person has to do to get Him there; the same Spirit doing that being-near is the one who was in chair three before you sat down in it.

And I will not soften this. Three days is early, and early is exactly when people decide they will handle it alone and then do so for a year. Find one real person this week: a counselor, a pastor, a friend who can hold a confidence, a doctor if you are not sleeping. You do not have to name anybody. I found something out and I have nowhere to put it is complete. If it goes darker than tired, do not wait; in the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a person will answer.

What the young woman did

Here is what I want you to keep from this morning, and it is not about you.

She did not ask. She did not say are you all right, which would have required you to lie. She did not offer anything or fix anything or produce a single word of advice.

She held on, and she got a tissue, and she kept working.

That is the whole method, and a twenty-three-year-old with no training performed it perfectly at ten fifteen on a Saturday. Stay, do not ask, keep doing the ordinary thing. And you can look for somebody who will do that for you, because now you know exactly what it looks like, and most people do not.

You have something to look for now, and you learned it from a stranger this morning. Scripture says the God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, and the word means called to the side of; the Holy Spirit is the one who put a twenty-three-year-old's hands on yours on the third day.

So chair three is not where you fell apart. It is where something got through for the first time since Wednesday, and where a stranger showed you what being stood beside actually looks like, and where somebody else in the room had been doing exactly that since before you arrived.
