Known And SafePsalm 139:2

The Host Who Never Sits Down

This message is for the man who has hosted his family's table every week for twenty-two years and has never once sat down through a whole meal, who knows every guest's preferences and has told none of them a single true thing about himself, and who has begun to notice that the serving is a position rather than a service

Twenty-two years of Friday nights and he has never once eaten a whole meal at his own table.

That is not a figure of speech. His wife pointed it out about four years ago, lightly, as an observation, and he laughed and said something about the bread, and she let it go, and it has sat in him ever since like a stone in a shoe.

He is a good host. That is genuinely true and everybody would say it. He knows that his brother-in-law does not eat the olives and that his niece has gone off dairy and that the man from two streets over who has come every Friday for six years takes his tea in a particular way that is slightly annoying to prepare and has never once had to ask for it.

He knows what everybody at that table needs before they know they need it, and he is up and down like a man on a wire, and the food does not stop coming, and it is one of the warmest rooms any of those people go into all week.

And not one of them knows a single true thing about him.

That is what he understood, about four years ago, and has been quietly circling ever since. He has hosted these people for twenty-two years. They love him. They would say he is the most generous man they know. And if you took any one of them aside and asked what he is carrying at the moment, they would not have an answer, and they would be surprised to discover that they did not.

Because standing up is a position.

That is the part he has never said out loud. When you are serving, you are seen constantly. Everybody looks at you all evening. You are the most visible person in the room. And nobody, in twenty-two years, has ever asked you a question you would have to think about, because you are moving, and because your hands are full, and because a man with a dish in each hand is plainly not available for that kind of conversation.

He is looked at all night. Every Friday. By people who love him.

And you know that table. You would rather be looked at than known, and you have built something warm and generous that keeps you visible and unreachable at the same time, and it works so well that nobody has ever thought to question it, including you.

So take this in before we go a step further. You are already known and it has not cost you anything. Psalm 139:1 opens with O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me, and both verbs are in the completed past, and the Holy Spirit is in this room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The Host Who Never Sits Down

Searched, and then he asks for it again

There is a psalm that everybody knows the middle of, and the shape of the whole thing is the argument.

It opens like this.

O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.Psalm 139:1-2

Searched is an aggressive word. It is used about mining, about digging into ground to find out what is in it. This is not a general awareness. It is thorough, deliberate investigation, and the psalm goes on for twenty verses saying so: my path and my lying down, my words before I say them, the dark and the light alike, the days written down before there were any of them.

By any ordinary reckoning that is the most alarming thing a person could be told.

And then look at how the psalm ends. After all twenty-three verses of it, having established that he is comprehensively and inescapably known, the man writing it says: search me, O God, and know my heart.

He asks for more of it.

That is the hinge of the whole psalm and it is what a man who never sits down needs. He has been searched, exhaustively, and has come out the other side of the experience asking to be searched again, which is not the response of somebody who found the searching bearable. It is the response of somebody who found it safe.

You are already searched out and the One who did it is still here. The written word puts the searching in the finished past and then has the man requesting it again at the end, which means the outcome of being fully known by God is already in and it was survivable; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into a courtyard on a Friday night.

Visible is not the same as known

I want to name the mechanism, because it is precise and you have never had words for it.

Being looked at and being known are not on the same axis. You can max out one at zero cost to the other, and hosting is the purest available way to do it.

When you serve, you are the most attended-to person in the room. Every eye goes to you repeatedly all evening. You are talked about warmly by people in your absence. On any measure of visibility you are the center of that table.

And the entire time, the traffic runs one direction. You learn what everybody there needs; they learn what you provide. That is not deception. Nobody at that table is being deceived about anything. It is simply that the role you occupy has no return channel built into it, and twenty-two years of a role with no return channel produces a man who is loved by nine people and known by none.

You were not deceiving anybody, and the role you took has no return channel in it. Psalm 139:5 says thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me, and beset is a word about being surrounded on every side rather than watched from a distance; His Spirit is the one doing that surrounding, and He is not grading your hospitality.

And here is the second half, and I want to be careful with it because this is the landing page of a whole site and the temptation here is to tell you what to disclose and to whom.

I am not going to. Nothing on this page will tell you what to say, or to whom, or when, and it will not tell you that the right person is your wife or your brother or your pastor. That is yours entirely. You know things about the people at that table that no article can know, and the choice of what and to whom belongs to you and always will.

You are choosing both the what and the whom, and nobody else gets a say in either. Proverbs 18:24 says there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and it describes one rather than a category or a rule about who it must be; the same Spirit who had that written is the one who has been at every Friday table for twenty-two years.

Sitting down is the whole of it

Here is the practical thing, and it is smaller and more physical than you expect.

The reason nobody asks you anything is that you are standing. That is not a metaphor. A man who is up and moving with a dish in each hand is visibly unavailable, and human beings read that instantly and correctly and do not interrupt it.

So the first move is not a confession. It is a chair.

Sit down at your own table for one course, this Friday, with a plate in front of you and both hands free, and stay there. Somebody will get up and fetch something and it will be fine, and the room will not collapse, and the tea will get made slightly wrong.

And in that fifteen minutes you will be, for the first time in twenty-two years, physically available, and it is very likely that within two Fridays somebody will ask you something real, because they always wanted to and there has never been an opening.

You are able to make yourself reachable by sitting down, and that is a smaller act than the one you have been dreading. Scripture says thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, which names both, and it is worth noticing that the downsitting comes first; the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you upright and generous through twenty-two years of Fridays and is not asking you to stop being either.

So the table is not a place where you are hidden. It is a warm room with nine people in it who love you, and a chair that has been notionally yours for twenty-two years, and one course of one Friday in which a man could put a plate down and stay.

And one plain thing. If what you are holding is heavier than a page can carry, find a real person this week. If it has gone darker than tired, call or text 988 in the United States, at any hour.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this courtyard. You built something genuinely good, and it has been feeding people for twenty-two years, and it has also been keeping you the most looked-at and least known person in the room, and you have never had to choose that because the role chose it for you every Friday automatically.

You are searched out and known already, right now, as you read this, and the One who did it stayed. It is written O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me, and the man who wrote it ends the psalm asking to be searched again, which is what a person does only when the first time was safe; His Spirit is the one who has been in this courtyard for twenty-two years of Fridays.

So the serving is not a wall you built on purpose. It is a good thing with no return channel in it, and there is a chair at the head of that table, and one course of one Friday in which a generous man could sit down with a plate in front of him and both hands free.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the courtyard once everybody has gone. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own table; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because twenty-two years of generosity has kept you unreachable. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the knowing in it, never the courage of your own disclosure. What you say and who you say it to is yours to choose; how any of it is received is His to decide, and He is kind about it.

  1. Twenty-two years of standing at my own table with a dish in each hand, you are genuinely good and you have no return channel in you, and I am sitting down for one course on Friday. It is written that He has searched me and known me, and that was finished before I ever set that table.
  2. Position that keeps me the most looked-at and least known man in a warm room, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. Scripture says Thou hast beset me behind and before and laid Thine hand upon me, and the Holy Spirit is doing that surrounding, so I am already reached and I am learning to be reachable.
  3. Lord, You searched a man out completely and he ended the psalm asking You to do it again. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been in this courtyard for twenty-two years of Fridays and stayed after the searching, and I am choosing one true thing and one safe person this week.
