Made On PurposePsalm 8:5

Fitting Room Number Nine

This message is for the woman standing in a store fitting room with three mirrors and a curtain that does not quite close, who came in for one ordinary thing and finds she is running an assessment she never agreed to run, and who realizes she has been having the same silent conversation in rooms like this since she was thirteen

She came in for one thing, which is what she keeps telling herself, and she has been in here eleven minutes.

Number nine. Three mirrors set at angles so you can see yourself from behind, which is a thing no human being needed and somebody decided to provide. A curtain that does not quite meet the wall. A hook, a bench, a small sign about the number of items, and a light directly overhead that is doing nobody any favors and cannot possibly be an accident.

And the conversation is running.

It started the instant the curtain closed, the way it always does, and it is not loud and it is not new. It is a running commentary in a flat, reasonable voice that sounds so much like her own thinking that she has never once treated it as something separate from her. It is not screaming at her. It is worse than that. It is being reasonable. It is going through things one at a time and being fair about them.

She is forty-three. She is a competent woman with a good job and a family who love her. And she is standing in a small room in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday errand, running an assessment she did not schedule, in a voice she has never asked the origin of.

And then, because it is Tuesday and because she is tired, she does something she has not done before. She asks how long.

And the answer arrives fast, which tells her it has been sitting there ready. Thirteen. A department store with her mother, and a sentence said by somebody in the family, offhand, not meant to wound, meant as practical advice about what suits a person, and delivered while she was standing in a room like this one.

Thirty years. The same conversation, in every small room with a mirror, for thirty years.

And you know that room. Somebody handed you a valuation before you were old enough to decline it, and it did not stay where it was handed over. It set itself up as a voice, and it does not sound like a voice, it sounds like you being honest with yourself, and that is precisely why it has never been questioned.

Take this in before we go one line further, because I think you have already braced to be told this is shallow. You are not shallow and this is not a small thing to have carried for thirty years. Psalm 139:15 says your substance was not hidden from Him when you were made in secret, and He was watching that work go on, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this small room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

Fitting Room Number Nine

The question asked lying on his back

There is a psalm that begins outdoors at night, with a man lying somewhere looking up, and the question he asks is the one everybody eventually asks.

He is looking at the moon and the stars, and the scale of it does what scale does, and out of that comes: what is man, that thou art mindful of him. It is not a rhetorical flourish. It is a genuine question from somebody who has just felt very small.

And here is the answer he gets.

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.Psalm 8:5

Crowned. Not: rated. Not: found adequate. A crown is placed on somebody by an authority, and it does not describe the wearer's qualities, it declares their standing, and nobody has ever earned one by being assessed favorably in a small room.

And the tense is done. Hast crowned. It is not a thing being considered.

You are crowned with glory and honor, and you walked into that store already wearing it. The written word puts the crowning in the finished past and puts it on humanity as such, which means it does not vary by day or by light or by which fitting room you are standing in; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that finished coronation past a curtain that does not quite close.

Notice also where the psalm asks the question. Outdoors, at night, under an enormous sky. The place a person gets a true answer about their size is not a room with three mirrors in it. It is a place where you can see how big everything actually is, and find out that you are still being thought about.

Why the reasonable voice is the hardest to catch

I want to be honest about why this has run for thirty years unchallenged, because if I pretend a person should have caught it earlier you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.

A cruel voice gets identified. Cruelty announces itself and something in you pushes back even when you cannot win. But a voice that is measured, fair-minded, and reasonable does not present as a voice at all. It presents as your own honest thinking. And nobody argues with their own honest thinking, because that is the very instrument you would have to argue with.

That is the whole trick of it. It is not that you have failed to defeat it. It is that it has never once been on the table as a thing that could be defeated, because it has been sitting in the chair marked me.

You were not weak to take it in, and you were thirteen and standing beside your mother. Isaiah 44:2 says the Lord formed you from the womb and will help you, and both of those verbs belong to Him; His Spirit does that helping at whatever pace He sets and asks nothing of you to qualify for it.

And there is a second half. The voice has served a purpose. It has gotten there first for thirty years, and going first means nothing anybody else says can land as a surprise. That is a real protection, and setting down a protection is frightening in a way that has nothing to do with logic.

You are not being asked to disarm anything by force, and nobody is holding a clock on this. Psalm 103:13 says that as a father pities his children, so the Lord pities them that fear Him, and pity there is the old strong word, the tenderness of somebody who understands the whole situation; the same Spirit carrying that tenderness is the one who made you tired enough on a Tuesday to finally ask how long.

And if what came up behind that curtain is heavier than a page can hold, do not sit with it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you can say one true sentence in front of.

Asking how long is most of it

Here is what actually happened in room number nine, and it was not a victory.

She asked a question. That is all. How long has this been running. And the answer came back fast and specific and dated, and the moment a voice has a date on it, it stops being your honest thinking and becomes what it always was, which is a sentence somebody said in 1996 that has been repeating on its own ever since.

Nothing was defeated. She did not feel better. She bought the thing she came in for and went home and made dinner.

But a voice with a date on it can be answered, and a voice that seems to be you cannot, and that is the whole difference and it is enormous.

You are able to ask it how long, and that question is available to you today. Scripture says He has crowned him with glory and honor, and it says it in answer to a person who had just asked what a human being even is; the Holy Spirit is the one who is putting a date on a voice that has been running undated since you were thirteen.

So room number nine is a small room with bad light and a curtain problem. It is not a courtroom, and there is nobody in there with authority to say anything about a woman God has already crowned. And the light overhead is genuinely terrible, and that is a fact about the store.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this room. You have been trying to win an argument with what you believed was your own honest thinking, and that is not a fight anybody wins, because you were arguing with the instrument you were arguing with. It was never your honest thinking. It has a date on it and it was installed by somebody who has forgotten saying it.

You are crowned right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that He has crowned him with glory and honor, and the crowning was placed by an authority who does not consult a mirror before confirming it; His Spirit is the one holding that crown in place behind a curtain that does not quite close.

So the assessment is adjourned. It never had standing, and the room it convenes in is a cubicle with a hook and a bench. And you are forty-three, and you were crowned before you walked in, and you came in for one thing, so get it and go.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, quietly is fine, but out loud. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own worth; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because a voice has been running since you were thirteen. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the weight in it, never the force of your own conviction. The crown was placed by somebody with the authority to place it and no mirror was consulted. How fast this reaches thirty years of small rooms is His to decide, and He is gentle about the pace.

  1. Assessment that starts the moment a curtain closes, you have a date on you now and you are not my honest thinking, and you are adjourned. It is written that He has crowned me with glory and honor, and I came in here for one ordinary thing and I am going to get it.
  2. Habit of getting there first with the verdict so nothing anybody says can land as a surprise, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God formed me from the womb and promised to help me, and the Holy Spirit is doing that helping, so my defense is being carried by Him and not by a running commentary.
  3. Lord, You are the God who crowned a human being before they had done anything to be assessed for. I thank You, because Your Spirit was watching while I was made in secret and was glad about it, and I am standing at a mirror tonight to say who I belong to.
