The Bakery at Five in the Morning

The ovens take forty minutes to come up and he has been doing this long enough that the whole first hour runs itself.

Five o'clock. Nobody in the street. The radio off, because he tried it for a year and found he preferred the quiet. Flour, water, salt, and the particular sound a dough makes when it has come together properly, which is a sound he could pick out in a room full of noise. It is the best hour of his day and he has said so out loud to people.

And then something surfaces in his head.

We are not going to describe it and I am not going to ask you what yours is. It surfaces. It was not invited, it was not summoned by anything he was doing, and it arrives the way these things arrive, which is sideways and complete and out of nowhere, in a shop at five in the morning with his hands in a dough.

Here is what happens next, and this is the actual subject of this article.

He stops. And then he begins the trial.

It goes about twenty minutes. Nobody convened it and nobody is prosecuting it but him, and it is thorough. Why did that come. What does it mean that it came here, of all places, at this hour. What does it say about a man that this is what is in him. Is this what happens when a person thinks he is doing better. And underneath all of the questions, running the whole time, one steady conclusion: it came, so it must be mine, and if it is mine, then this is who I actually am.

The ovens come up. He shapes the loaves. He does it well, because his hands do not need him for that. And by the time he turns the sign at six-thirty he has spent the best hour of his day in a courtroom.

And you know that hour. Something arrives in your head that you did not choose to keep and cannot get out, and the arrival is bad and the twenty minutes afterward are worse, and nobody has ever told you that those are two entirely different events.

So hear this before we take one more step, because I think you have already braced to be told what this means about you. You are not what surfaces in you, and it has no right to name you. Romans 7:20 has Paul making exactly that distinction about himself, plainly, in the first person, in a letter that is in the Bible on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this bakery at five in the morning and is not embarrassed to be here.

A list that tells you where to look

There is a short list Paul gives to a church that was anxious, and it is quoted constantly and almost always as the wrong kind of instruction.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.Philippians 4:8

Now look at the verb, because everything depends on it. Think on these things. It is an instruction about where to direct attention. It is a pointing.

It is not an instruction about what a mind is permitted to produce. There is no line in that passage that says: and if anything else appears, you have failed. Paul is not auditing the contents of anybody's head. He is doing what a person does when they take someone by the elbow and turn them to face something: he is telling an anxious church where to look.

And notice what he is not doing. He is not telling them to fight anything. There is no combat verb anywhere in it. He does not say resist these things, examine these things, or account for these things. He gives them somewhere to go.

You are being given a direction to look, and you were never handed a standard for what may appear. The written word puts a pointing verb in that sentence and no auditing verb anywhere near it, which means the list was never a test you have been failing; and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the turning of a head, at five in the morning, with flour on both hands.

The list itself is worth noticing too. True, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report. Those are things you look at. They are outside of you. Every single one of them is somewhere else, which is the whole point of being told to look at them.

The arrival and the trial are two different things

I want to separate two things that have been welded together in you for years, because the welding is doing most of the damage.

The first thing is the arrival. Something surfaces. That takes about a second and you had no vote in it. A mind is an associative organ and it produces material continuously and it does not consult you about the inventory, and it never has, and this is true of every human being who has ever lived including the ones you assume are fine.

The second thing is the trial. That takes twenty minutes and you run every part of it. The prosecution, the evidence, the verdict, the sentencing. And here is what a person almost never notices: the trial is not a response to the arrival. The trial is what makes the arrival matter. Something that surfaces and is allowed to pass takes a second of your life. Something that surfaces and is prosecuted takes the best hour of your day and leaves a residue that lasts until lunchtime.

You were never appointed to that bench, and you have been doing a job that was not given to you. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the word therefore is pointing back at an argument that has already been concluded rather than one you have to win each morning; His Spirit is the one who carries that verdict, and it does not get re-argued in a bakery.

And there is a second half that should be said gently, because it is the reason the trial keeps convening. You run it because you are conscientious. Somewhere you learned that a serious person examines himself, and you are a serious person, and so when something surfaces you do the responsible thing. The trial is not laziness or self-indulgence. It is a good instinct pointed at a case that does not exist.

You are not being asked to stop caring about what kind of man you are, and nobody is telling you to be careless. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a verse about a God who has never once expected a person to be more solid than He made them; the same Spirit doing that remembering is the one who has kept you standing in that shop every morning for years.

And if what runs in that quiet hour is heavier than a page can hold, do not carry it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you do not have to be finished in front of.

Prepared in advance, not composed under pressure

Here is the practical part, and it is small on purpose.

The reason the trial wins is that it is ready and you are not. It arrives with its whole case prepared, and you are standing there at five in the morning with dough on your hands, composing a defense from nothing, under pressure, in a compromised state. Nobody wins an argument they are drafting live.

So you do not draft it live. You write one line now, today, in the daylight, when nothing has surfaced and your head is clear, and you keep it, and when the moment comes you do not think, you say it out loud.

Not a long line. Not a good line. One line, and it should be so plain that it can be said by a tired man with flour on his hands.

You are able to have that line ready before you need it, and having it ready is most of the work. Scripture says think on these things, which is an instruction that presupposes you have somewhere prepared to send your attention; the Holy Spirit is the one who put this page in front of you at an hour when nothing is currently surfacing and you can write a sentence calmly.

So five in the morning is not a courtroom. It is a bakery with good bread in it, and a man whose hands know what they are doing, and something that surfaced and was allowed to keep going.
