The Man Who Always Takes the Mic

This message is for the man who sings first at every works night out and is looked at by the whole room, and has not told one true thing about himself to one person in years

He is up first. He is always up first. The works night out is barely at the second round and he has the microphone in his hand and the room is his: thirty people from the office who spend all week not looking at each other, and every one of them is looking at him, and he knows exactly what to do with that. The big voice, the bit where he points at the manager on the chorus, the walk along the front of the tables. He is very good at it. He has been very good at it for years.

And when he sits back down, sweating a little, with people slapping his shoulder as he passes, he does the other thing he is very good at, which is nothing. He asks the girl from accounts about her holiday. He gets the next round. He is warm to everybody and he tells nobody anything, and by the time the taxis come, thirty people have looked at him for three hours and not one of them could tell you a single true thing about him that he did not choose to perform.

He likes it that way. That is the part that is hard to say. He would rather be looked at than known, because a room that looks at you can be managed, and a person who knows you cannot. Being looked at costs him a song. Being known would cost him the whole man behind it, and he has never once found the price worth paying.

You know him. You may be him. It does not have to be a microphone; it can be the joke you always have ready, the busy you always are, the face you have on before the door opens, the way you steer every conversation onto other people so that it never comes to rest on you. You are seen all day, and it is safe, because seen is a surface.

You are already known all the way through, and the worst of it is behind you. Psalm 139:1 says the Lord has searched you and known you, and both verbs are finished rather than pending, and the Holy Spirit is in this room and is not embarrassed to be here. Known is the thing you have kept out of reach of everybody, including, if you are honest, God. And it is costing more than the singing ever did.

The Man Who Always Takes the Mic

The woman who arranged her day to be unseen

Let me take you to a well at midday, because I want you to watch somebody being known and watch what it did to her.

She came at noon, which is not when women came for water. Noon is when the well is empty and the sun is at its worst and nobody has to look at you. Whatever her reasons, and I am not going to guess at them and neither should you, she had arranged her life around being unseen. And a stranger was sitting on the wall, and He asked her for a drink, and within a few minutes He had told her, gently and without one word of contempt, the whole shape of her life.

Watch what she did next. She did not run home and lock the door.

Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?John 4:29

She ran to the town. She ran to the people she had spent years arranging not to meet, and she said, come and see, He told me everything. Being fully known by Him did not destroy her. It was the first safe thing that had happened to her in years, and she could not keep it in.

So hear this now, whichever mask you have on. You are known already, all of it, by the One who does not leave. John 4 shows Him telling a woman everything and staying on the wall, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that same knowing present in you today. It is not written that He looked at her. It is written that He knew her, and she was not exposed. There is a difference between the two, and your whole life has been lived on the wrong side of it.

Looked at is a surface, known is a person

Now let me name the weight, because it is not what you think.

You think being known would cost you. It would not. It already has. What has been costing you, night after night, is being looked at, because a person who is only looked at has to keep producing the surface, and the surface has to be maintained, and the maintenance never ends. The song has to be sung again next month. The joke has to be ready. And behind all of it there is a man nobody has met, and he is tired.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.1 Corinthians 13:12

Even as I have been fully known. Paul says it as a thing already done. Not you will be known if you manage it. You have been fully known, and it is the ground he stands on to hope for anything else. You have been fully known and you are still standing. Scripture says the knowing is finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries the safety of it into your body, so that being known by Him is not the edge of a cliff but the floor under your feet. That is what is written, and I am only turning the light on over it.

Now let me be careful with you, because this is the site's landing category and I do not want to overreach. Nothing here tells you what to say to anybody. Nothing here tells you who. It does not have to be the person you live with, and it does not have to be about anything in particular. This is not a confession, and it is not a disclosure, and no one on this page is staging one for you. This is one human being choosing to let one other human being know one true thing, and both the thing and the person are yours to choose. If there is genuinely nobody safe, that is real, and finding a real person, a pastor, a counselor, someone trained to hold weight, is a good next step and not a failure. And if the tiredness behind the mask has gone further than tired, if it has started to say you would rather not be here at all, please tell one real person tonight, and in the United States call or text 988 at any hour, or your local emergency number wherever you are. That is not the end of your dignity. It is how God has always sent it back, through a person who shows up.

The breakthrough

Here is what is happening now, wherever the mask is.

You are known and you are not exposed. John 4 says He told her everything and she ran to the town glad, and it is His Spirit who has been telling you, under the singing, that being seen by God is the safest place a person can stand. That is not a technique. It is a fact about Him, and it was true before you read this, and it stays true after you close it.

The reason a room can look at you all night and leave you empty is that a look asks nothing and gives nothing. Being known asks one true thing and gives back a person. You have been paying with your whole self for a surface. Tonight the price changes.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud, wherever the mask usually goes on. You were given this ground by Christ Himself: He knew a woman entirely and stayed on the wall, and the Spirit who did that in her is the same Spirit in you, so the authority to name what being known is has been handed to you and not borrowed from the room. Scripture says you have been fully known already; you are only agreeing with what is finished. And what God does with the person you tell, and with the days after, He does in His own way and on no schedule of yours. Tonight you say the true thing. The rest is His.

  1. Mask I wear when the room is looking, you are heavy and you are coming off tonight in front of One. Scripture says a woman at a well was told everything she ever did and ran to the town glad, and I am known the way she was known, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that being known is the end of me, you have the story backwards. Being looked at is what has been costing me, and it is written that I have been fully known already, so the price is paid before I open my mouth. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes being known safe, and I am telling one true thing to one safe person this week.
  3. Lord, You see all of it and You stay, and being seen by You is the safest place I have ever stood. I thank You, because Your Spirit knows me fully already, and I am known and I am not exposed.
