Blessing My ChildrenMatthew 18:10

The Aunt at the Birthday Party

This message is for the aunt at her niece's ninth birthday party who is not a parent and has quietly concluded that she therefore has no standing to say anything that matters to this child, and who has about four minutes alone with her in a kitchen while everybody else is outside

Everybody is outside. There is a game happening that has rules only the children understand, and two of the mothers are at the table with the wreckage of paper plates, and somebody's dog has got hold of a napkin.

She is in the kitchen putting nine candles into a cake, which is the job she volunteered for because it is a job and having a job at a family gathering is easier than not having one.

And her niece comes in for a glass of water.

Just the two of them. Nine years old. There is water running and a cake with eight candles in it and about four minutes before somebody comes looking for both of them.

And her niece says something. Nothing dramatic. Something small and offhand about herself, the way children do, delivered lightly on the way to the fridge, and it has a stone in it. An assumption. A small settled opinion about what she is and how she measures up that a nine-year-old did not manufacture on her own.

And her aunt stands there with a candle in her hand and does not say anything.

Not because she has nothing to say. She has plenty to say. She has been thinking about that girl for a year.

She does not say anything because she is not her mother.

That is the whole of it, and she has never articulated it out loud, but it runs underneath every interaction she has with this child. She is the aunt. She does not have children. She sees this girl maybe fifteen times a year. She is not there for the homework or the illnesses or the difficult evenings, and she has quietly concluded, somewhere along the way, that this disqualifies her from saying anything that carries weight. She can be fun. She can be generous. She can be the one who remembers what the girl is interested in.

She cannot, she has decided, say anything that matters, because that is her sister's territory and she is a visitor in it.

So she says something about the cake, and the girl takes her water outside, and the moment closes.

And you know that kitchen. There is a child in your life you love, and you are not their parent, and you have quietly ruled yourself out of the only conversation you actually wanted to have with them.

So take this in before we go a step further. You are not a visitor in that child's life and you have never been one. Psalm 139:16 says His eyes saw her substance before it was fashioned and all her days were written down, and the Holy Spirit is in this kitchen with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The Aunt at the Birthday Party

Whose standing is actually in question

There is a warning Jesus gives about children, and everybody remembers the warning and almost nobody looks at the reason attached to it.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.Matthew 18:10

The warning is do not despise one of these. And despise there is not about cruelty; the sense is closer to think little of, count as minor, treat as not requiring your serious attention.

And then look at the reason He gives, because it is not the reason anybody would expect. He does not say because they are innocent, or because they are vulnerable, or because you will answer for it. He says: because in heaven their angels always behold the face of My Father.

That is a statement about standing. Access to the face of the King, permanently, without appointment. It is court language, and He applies it to the smallest and least significant person in the room, and He offers it as the reason nobody should treat that person as a minor matter.

So in the one passage where you would expect an argument about who is qualified to speak into a child's life, the standing under discussion is the child's, and it is already the highest in the building.

You are standing next to somebody whose access is permanent, and yours was never the question. The written word grounds the warning in the child's standing rather than in the credentials of the adults nearby, which means the disqualification you have been operating under was never issued by anybody; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into a kitchen with nine candles on a counter.

Why you ruled yourself out

I want to name what happened, because you did not decide this in one go.

It accumulated. Every time you were not there for something, a small entry went in the ledger. You were not there for the hospital thing. You were not there for the hard year. You are not the one who knows which cup she will drink from. And a person who is honest and modest, which you are, adds those up over time and arrives at a conclusion that feels like humility.

But look at what the conclusion actually says. It says the right to tell a child who she is belongs to whoever has logged the most hours. And nobody believes that when it is stated plainly, and you would not say it to your sister about anybody else, and yet you have been living under it for years.

You were not being humble, and the rule you have been keeping was never given to you. 3 John 1:4 says I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth, and it is written by a man about people who were not his children by any biological reckoning at all; His Spirit is the one who put that girl in your life, and He is not counting your hours.

And there is a second half that matters here. You are not a substitute for her mother and this article is not asking you to be one, and nothing on this page suggests you say anything that undercuts her parents or steps into their place. That is not what a blessing is. A blessing is not a correction of somebody else's parenting and it is not a competing voice.

It is one more voice, saying a true thing, from a different direction, and children need more than one, and the ones they get from outside the house often land differently precisely because they come from outside it.

You are not competing with anybody, and one more voice was always the design. Psalm 78:4 says we will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and the we there is a community rather than a household; the same Spirit who had that written is the one who put you alone in a kitchen with her for four minutes.

Fifteen times a year is a great deal

Here is what I want to hand you, and it will not sound like much until you sit with it.

You see her fifteen times a year. You have decided that is a small number. Count what it actually is. Fifteen occasions a year, for however many years, in which a woman who is not obliged to be interested in her is interested in her.

That is not a diminished version of what her mother has. It is a different thing entirely, and it has one property her mother's does not: you are not the one who says no about bedtimes and homework and shoes. There is no friction in your account. Which means a sentence from you can land somewhere a sentence from a parent has to get past a great deal of ordinary daily history first.

That is not a criticism of her mother. It is a description of a position you happen to hold and have been treating as a disqualification.

You are holding a position that carries something nobody else in that family can carry. Scripture says take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones, and the taking heed is addressed to everybody in earshot rather than to parents alone; the Holy Spirit is the one who arranged four minutes in a kitchen with the water running.

So the kitchen is not somebody else's territory. It is a room with nine candles in it, and a girl who came in for a glass of water and said something with a stone in it, and a woman with standing she did not know she had.

And before the child, you. If there is something under this that is heavier than a page can carry, do not hold it on your own. Find one real person this week who can sit with you without needing to solve it, and if it has gone further than tired, call or text 988 in the United States, at any hour, and a person will answer.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this kitchen. You have been operating under a rule that says the right to speak into a child's life belongs to whoever has logged the most hours, and you have called that rule humility and kept it for years, and it has cost that girl the one voice in her life that has no friction in it.

You are standing beside somebody whose standing in heaven is permanent, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that their angels do always behold the face of My Father, and He gave that as the reason nobody should treat a child as a minor matter; His Spirit is the one who put you alone in a kitchen with her while everybody else was outside.

So you are not a visitor. There is a cake with nine candles on it, and a girl who will come back through this kitchen before the afternoon is over, and an aunt who has as much standing as anybody in the yard.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the car on the way home. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over that child; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because you are not her mother. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the standing in it, never the number of hours you have logged. What she does with what she hears is hers and God's and it is not yours to secure; how she grows is His to decide, and He is kind about it.

  1. Rule I have kept for years that says the right to speak into her life belongs to whoever has logged the most hours, you called yourself humility and you were never given to me by anybody. It is written that their angels always behold the face of the Father, and the standing under discussion in that verse is hers and it is permanent.
  2. Ledger I have been keeping of every hard year I was not there for, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. Scripture says whoever receives one such child in His name receives Him, and the Holy Spirit is doing that receiving through me, so fifteen times a year is not a diminished version of anything.
  3. Lord, You grounded the whole warning in a child's standing and never once in the credentials of the adults nearby. I thank You, because Your Spirit put me alone in a kitchen with her for four minutes while everybody else was outside, and I am saying one true sentence before this afternoon is over.
