Half past eight, and the negotiation is over, and he has won the thing he always wins, which is the hall light.
Leave it on. Not the bedroom one, which is too much. The hall one, door open about a hand's width, so there is a strip of it across the floor and just onto the edge of the bed.
His father says yes. He has said yes to this for about three years and has never once considered saying no, because it costs nothing and because the boy asks for it in a way a father would have to be made of something harder to refuse.
So the light stays on and the door stays open a hand's width and the man sits on the edge of the bed for a minute the way he does, and the day is basically over.
And he is very tired. It has been a long week and a long day inside it, and there is a thing at work that is not going well and a bill that he has not told anybody about yet, and he has about ninety seconds of being a good father left in him before he goes downstairs and does not talk to anybody for an hour.
And in the ninety seconds he thinks something that catches him off guard.
He thinks: I wish I could leave something on in him.
Because the hall light works. It works every night. But it works because it is on the outside of the boy, and the boy is seven, and in a while he is going to be in rooms his father cannot leave a light on in, and rooms after that, and the whole trajectory of the next fifteen years is a steady reduction in the number of places a father can reach.
And what he wants, sitting on that bed at half past eight on a Thursday, is to put something inside the boy that does the same job the hall light does, and stays on when he is not in the building.
And he has absolutely no idea what that would consist of or how a man would go about saying it.
So he ruffles his hair and says goodnight, buddy, and goes downstairs.
And you know that bed. You want to hand a child something durable and what you have is a light switch and ninety seconds and a vocabulary that runs out at goodnight.
So take this in before we go a step further. You are already holding what you want to give him, and it is not something you have to construct. Psalm 139:16 says His eyes saw that boy's substance before it was fashioned and all his days were written down before there were any of them, and the Holy Spirit is in this room with you.

The word is a legal one
There is a line about children that gets read as sentiment and is nothing of the kind. It is a property term.
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.Psalm 127:3
Heritage. The word underneath it is the word for an inheritance, an allotted portion, the piece of land that came to a family and stays with a family and is not something anybody in that family produced. It is the language of the division of the land: this is your portion, it is yours by grant, and it did not come to you because you earned it.
And notice whose heritage it says the children are. An heritage of the LORD. They are His allotment. Which means, precisely, that the parent is holding something that belongs to somebody else, and holding it under a grant, and is not the origin of it and not the owner of it.
Now sit with what that does to a tired man on the edge of a bed at half past eight.
You have been running the whole of fatherhood as manufacture. What can I produce in him, what can I install, what can I leave on. And the verse says the boy is not your product. He is a portion, entrusted, from somebody who had him first and will have him after, and your job in the ninety seconds is not to build something into him but to say out loud what is already true about whose he is.
You are holding something that belongs to God and was given to you to hold, and you were never the manufacturer. The written word calls a child an heritage and a reward rather than an achievement, which means the pressure you have been carrying to construct something durable was never part of the arrangement; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into a bedroom with the door open a hand's width.
The light on the outside is not a failure
I want to say something about the hall light, because you have been half apologizing for it in your head.
It is on the outside of him, and it is a good thing, and you should keep doing it, because a seven-year-old is supposed to have things on the outside of him. Nobody expects a small boy to generate his own security, and the fact that he asks for a light and gets one every night is teaching him something he will not be able to name for thirty years, which is that when he asks, somebody says yes.
That is not nothing. That is the entire architecture of how a person later believes that God says yes.
You were not failing to reach him, and the outside things are how the inside things get built. Isaiah 40:11 says he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and both of those are external and physical and done to something that cannot carry itself; His Spirit is the one doing that gathering, and He is not measuring your ninety seconds.
And here is the second half, and it is for the man on the edge of the bed and not for the boy in it. You have about ninety seconds left tonight because there is a thing at work and a bill nobody knows about, and you have been treating your own tiredness as a disqualification from doing this properly.
It is not. What you have to say tonight takes eight seconds and does not require you to be at your best, and there is something almost designed about the fact that a blessing is short enough to be said by a man who has nothing left.
You are not being asked for a good version of yourself tonight, and eight seconds is inside your budget. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a verse about a God who has never expected a man to be sturdier than He made him; the same Spirit doing that remembering is the one who has kept you sitting on the edge of that bed at the end of a long week.
What you can actually leave on
Here is the answer to the thing you thought in the ninety seconds, and it is smaller and better than what you were imagining.
You cannot install anything. Nobody can. But you can say one sentence, out loud, at the same point in the same routine, until it is furniture in that boy's head, and a sentence said seven hundred times by a father sitting on the edge of a bed does not need a light to stay on.
That is the mechanism. Not intensity. Repetition, at a fixed point, in an ordinary voice, until it stops being a thing his father said and becomes part of the shape of the room.
And the content of it is not something you have to invent, because it is not about him at all in the sense you were worrying about. It is about whose he is. You are God's and He is glad about you. That is eight seconds and it is true and it does not depend on how the day went or how the man saying it is doing.
You have a sentence and a fixed point and seven hundred nights, and that is how something gets left on. Scripture says children are an heritage of the LORD and the fruit of the womb is his reward, and a heritage is spoken about rather than manufactured; the Holy Spirit is the one who put a thought into a tired man's head at half past eight on a Thursday.
So the hall light is not the limit of what you can reach. It is a good thing you do every night, and there is a fixed point in a routine right beside it, and eight seconds inside the budget of a man who has nothing left.
And a word for you rather than for them. If what sits under this is heavier than a page can carry, find a real person this week. If it has gone darker than tired, call or text 988.
Here is what turns in this room. You wanted to install something durable and you concluded you had nothing to install, and underneath that was a belief that a child is a thing a parent builds. He is not. He is a portion, allotted, belonging to somebody else and held by you under a grant, and what you actually owe him is not construction, it is testimony: saying out loud, at a fixed point, on ordinary nights, what is already true about whose he is.
You are holding an heritage of the Lord, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that children are an heritage of the LORD and the fruit of the womb is His reward, and a heritage is granted rather than produced; His Spirit is the one who has been in this room every night for three years while a light stayed on in the hall.
So the hall light is not the edge of what you can reach. There is a fixed point in a routine, and eight seconds, and a boy who is going to hear the same sentence seven hundred times from a man sitting on the edge of his bed.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud on the stairs after you have pulled the door to. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over that boy; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because you have ninety seconds of good fathering left tonight. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the granting in it. How he grows is His to decide, and it is not yours to secure, and He is kind about it.
- Hall light I have left on for three years, you are a good thing and you are on the outside of him and you were never the limit of what I can reach. It is written that children are an heritage of the Lord, and I am holding something that belongs to Somebody else and I am not the one who made it.
- Belief that a child is a thing a father builds and that I have nothing left tonight to build with, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. Scripture says He knows my frame and remembers that I am dust, and the Holy Spirit is doing that remembering, so eight seconds is inside my budget and always was.
- Lord, You had him first and You will have him after, and I am holding him under a grant. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been in that room every night for three years while a light stayed on in the hall, and I am saying one sentence at the same point tomorrow and the night after that.
