The Reading Room Closes at Six

She could tell you what every regular in this room borrows, and she could not tell you what a single one of them is carrying.

The man in the brown coat takes military history, always the same three shelves, and returns them early. There is a woman who comes on Wednesdays for large print romances and takes four at a time and has done for six years. A young father comes on Saturdays and lets his daughter pick anything at all, and then quietly takes out a book about sleep. The teenager who reads nothing but atlases. The retired teacher who requests things from other branches and always apologizes for the trouble.

She knows all of it. She could reconstruct this whole neighborhood from its borrowing record and be right about most of it.

It is not that she is unfriendly. She says afternoon, and asks about the weather and the grandchildren, and she means it in the way you mean a thing that costs nothing. But somewhere in the years the people stopped arriving as people and started arriving as records. Card, title, due date, next. Faces come across that desk the way pictures come, quick, sorted, filed, gone, and her hands do the stamp and her eyes do a thing they have been doing so long she no longer hears them doing it.

Then the man in the brown coat brings a book back at ten to six and does not leave.

He sets it down and he says: I took this one because my father was at Anzio and he never talked about it, and I thought if I read enough of them I would find the day he stopped being able to.

And then he stands there. He does not explain further. He has said the true thing and now he is waiting, and what he is waiting for has nothing to do with the due date.

So she looks at him. The whole face. Seventy-something, a small nick of a shave, eyes that have decided to risk something at ten to six on a Tuesday. And it costs her something. She does not know why it costs her something. She hears herself say: did you find it, and he says, no, and then, after a while, but I know a lot more about what he was carrying, and she says: that is not nothing. And he nods and goes, and the door closes, and the room is very quiet.

And she stands at her desk with the book still unscanned, having looked at one whole human being for the first time in longer than she can measure, and having found it hard.

And you know that desk. Somewhere along the way you stopped seeing people and started seeing images of them, and nobody handed you a form to sign the day it happened. Faces began arriving already summarized. And this week somebody set down the true thing and waited, and it cost you, and you did not expect it to.

Take this in before we go any further, because I think you have already braced for the opposite. You are not a distant woman and the years behind that desk did not make you one. Genesis 1:31 says God looked at everything He had made and called it very good, and your eyes were inside that verdict; what has happened since is a wound laid over a gift and not a judgment on the one carrying it, and the Holy Spirit is in this quiet room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The woman who gave God a name

Come out to a spring in the wilderness on the road to Shur, where a young Egyptian woman is sitting because she has run away from a household in which nobody has ever once asked her what she wanted.

She is a servant. She is not the story, as far as anybody in that household is concerned. She is a means to somebody else's arrangement, and the arrangement has gone badly, and she has left. And out there, with nothing and nobody, the angel of the Lord finds her by a spring of water and does the thing nobody in that house had done, which is to ask her a question and then use her name while asking it.

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I not also here looked after him that seeth me?Genesis 16:13

She named Him. Read that again and let it be as strange as it is. The first person recorded in the whole book naming God is not a patriarch and not a prophet. It is a foreign servant woman in a wilderness who had been treated as a function by everybody she knew, and the name she gave Him was about His eyes.

You are looked at by a God who was named for looking, and He was doing it long before anybody asked you a question. The written word puts that name in the mouth of somebody a whole household had reduced to her usefulness, which tells you exactly whose sight He is best known by; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that same looking into a reading room at closing time.

And notice what He did not do. He did not lecture her about running. He asked where she had come from and where she was going, which are two questions you only ask a person you consider to be a person.

Why a record is easier than a face

I want to be honest about why the man in the brown coat was hard, because if I pretend it should have been easy you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.

A record is easier than a face because a record is complete. Titles, dates, a pattern. When you know what somebody borrows you know something true about them and you are finished, and finished is restful. A face is not finished. He said Anzio and his father and never talked about it, and there is nowhere in this building to file that, and being handed something with no shelf is a real weight. Your eyes have been trained for years to keep the weight down at the level of the card. Of course it cost. That is not the wound. That is the sight coming back, and it always costs at the desk.

You were given eyes that hold a whole person, and you had them long before the work taught them to summarize. Psalm 94:9 asks whether the One who formed the eye cannot see, and it only bites because the forming was deliberate; His Spirit is doing the reopening at His own pace, and He is neither hurrying you nor counting the years.

There is a second thing under it and it should be said gently, because a quiet room attracts quiet people. To keep others at the level of a record is also to stay at that level yourself. Nobody asks the librarian what she is carrying. That is restful too, and it is lonely, and both of those are true at once and neither cancels the other.

You are not being asked to open that up by force, and there is no clock anywhere near this. Ezekiel 36:26 promised a heart of flesh where the stone had been, and it arrives as something done to a person rather than pressed out of one; the same Spirit doing that work is the one who kept a man in a brown coat standing at a desk at ten to six.

And if what sits under your own quiet is heavier than a page can hold, do not carry it by yourself. Find a real person this week, somebody who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be one face you can look at.

There is a phrase in what she said that people walk past. Have I not also here looked after him that seeth me. Also here. Out here. In the wilderness, off the road, in the place where nothing is supposed to be happening and nobody important is watching.

That is a reading room at ten to six. That is the last twenty minutes of a Tuesday in a small branch library that the budget discussions keep mentioning. Nothing important is supposed to be happening in a room like this, and a man just told you the truest thing he has said out loud in a year.

You are standing in an also here, and the looking has been going on in it the whole time. Scripture says she called Him the God who sees, and she said it in the emptiest place in her life rather than in the household where the important things were happening; the Holy Spirit is the one doing that looking in a room with the lights half off.

So the reading room is not a record. It is the man whose father was at Anzio, and the woman who takes four large print books because the evenings are long, and the young father who quietly borrows something about sleep. Names, all of them, under the titles. And your eyes are His, and He is handing them back one face at a time.
