He has the whole thing down to a system, and he would tell you that himself, because he is not a proud man and he thinks the system is humility.
Right hand out, left hand covering, eye contact, good morning, glad you're here, bulletin, and then the smallest turn of the shoulder that sends a person gently forward so the next one can come. Eleven years of Sundays. Two services. Somewhere near three hundred hands a week, which is fifteen thousand a year, which is a number he has never once done the arithmetic on because it would only embarrass him.
He is good at it. That is the whole trouble. He is so good at it that none of it requires him anymore. The warmth is real and it is also automatic, in the way a well-worn phrase is still true and still a phrase, and somewhere in the eleven years the faces stopped arriving as faces. They arrive now as a flow. Coats and smiles and a hand coming up to meet his, quick, sorted, gone, and his mouth doing the good morning and his eyes doing something they have been doing for a long time without asking him.
Then a woman does not let go.
She is small and gray and she takes his hand and holds it in both of hers, and she does not move on. The gentle shoulder turn does nothing. The next person in line adjusts around them the way water goes around a stone. And she looks up at him and says: I had a hard week. And then she waits.
He has to actually look at her. Not the flow, not the coat, her. The whole face, the eyes gone pink at the rims, the mouth held very steady. And it costs him something. He does not know why it costs him something. He hears himself say her name and then realize, in the middle of saying it, that he had to reach for it, and that eleven years is a long time to reach for a name.
They talk for four minutes. Behind them the flow finds its own way in. And when she finally goes he stands in the doorway with his hands empty, having looked at one whole human being for the first time in longer than he can measure, and having found it hard.
And you know that doorway. Somewhere along the way you stopped seeing people and started seeing images of them, and nobody handed you a form to sign the day it happened. Faces began arriving sorted. And this week somebody stood still in front of you and would not move on, and it cost you, and you did not expect it to.
Say this before you go one line further, because I think you have already braced for the opposite. You are not a fraud with a good handshake and you were not pretending for eleven years. Genesis 1:31 says God looked at everything He had made and called it very good, and your eyes were in that verdict; what has happened since is a wound laid over a gift, not a verdict on the one carrying it, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this doorway with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

What happened in Him when He saw a crowd
Come to a hillside where Jesus is going through all the towns and villages, and watch the moment the text stops describing what He did and describes what happened inside Him.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.Matthew 9:36
He saw the multitudes. A multitude is exactly the thing a person cannot see. It is the word for a flow: coats and faces and a hand coming up, quick, sorted, gone. And the sentence does not say He tolerated them or served them or worked through them. It says something turned over inside Him, and the word underneath the English is a word about the inside of a body, a wrench in the gut, the way you feel it in your stomach when a person you love is hurt.
You have that same wrench in you, and it did not leave when your warmth went automatic. The written word puts the compassion in Him before it puts a single instruction in anybody's mouth, which means seeing was not the reward for right behavior, it was where everything started; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that same turning-over into a foyer eleven years deep in a good system.
Then watch what He does not do. He does not say to the crowd: you should have come better prepared. He does not say to Himself: I should be better at this by now. He looks, He is moved, and He says the harvest is plentiful and the workers are few, which is a sentence about the shortage of people looking, and not a sentence about a shortage in the ones being looked at.
What a face costs a man who is good at his job
I want to be honest about why it was hard with the woman, because if I pretend it should have been easy you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.
Looking at a whole person costs something because a whole person makes a claim on you. A flow makes none. A flow asks nothing, needs nothing, waits for nothing, and moves along on its own. She said I had a hard week and then stopped talking, and the silence after it was the claim, and that is a small weight and a real one. Your eyes have been trained for years to set weights down before they land. Of course it cost. That is not the wound. That is sight coming back, and sight always costs at the door.
You were given eyes that hold a person, and you were given them long before anything happened to them. Psalm 94:9 asks whether the One who planted the ear cannot hear and whether the One who formed the eye cannot see, and the question is only sharp because the forming was deliberate; His Spirit is doing the reopening at His own pace, and He is neither rushing you nor keeping a tally.
There is a second thing under the cost and it deserves plain naming. Being good at a thing is one of the safest places to hide. Nobody investigates a man whose handshake is warm. A system that works is not questioned, least of all by the one running it, and eleven years is long enough for a real gift to become a very comfortable wall.
You are not being asked to tear that wall down by force, and nobody is standing over you with a stopwatch. Ezekiel 36:26 promised a heart of flesh where the stone had been, and it was promised as something done to a person rather than squeezed out of one; the same Spirit who does that work is the one who sent a small gray woman who would not let go of a hand.
And if what is under your own week is heavier than a page can carry, do not sit alone with it. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix anything, and let them be one face you can look at.
The harvest was always people
Here is the part of the hillside people hurry past. The word harvest gets read as a project, a target, a number to be hit. But look at what He had just seen. Sheep with no shepherd. Scattered and worn out. The harvest is not a quantity. The harvest is those exact faces, one at a time, and the shortage He named was a shortage of people willing to look at them.
You are one of the few, and you have been one the whole time, even through the eleven years. Scripture says He was moved with compassion because they fainted and were scattered, and the seeing came first and the sending came second; the Holy Spirit is doing the seeing in you now, and He is not waiting for your system to break before He starts.
So the flow at the door is not a flow. It is the woman with the hard week, and the man who comes late every single Sunday because of something he has never explained to anybody, and the family who sit at the back for a reason. Names, all of them, under the coats. And your eyes are His, and He is handing them back one face at a time.
Here is what turns in this room. You believed the sorting was who you had become, and that is why it has felt like a sentence and not an injury: a way of seeing feels like a self. It is not a self. It is a wound laid over a gift, and the gift is older than the wound and it outlasts it.
You are a man with his sight being handed back, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a hope. It is written that when He saw the multitudes He was moved, and the moving began on His side of the hill; His Spirit is the one turning your eyes over at the door, in the foyer, on the driveway, wherever somebody has stopped in front of you and will not move on.
So three hundred hands is not three hundred hands. It is three hundred people, each of them somebody God made and knows by name and would cross a hillside for. And the first face is enough for today. He is not asking you for the whole flow.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, and say them with your head up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own eyes; the authority is His and it has not lapsed because your warmth went automatic for eleven years. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the turning in it, never the effort of your looking. The crowd on that hillside did not earn the compassion that moved toward them. How quickly the seeing reaches every face at your door is His to decide, and He is gentle about the pace.
- Doorway I have stood in for eleven years, you are not a flow, you are the woman with the hard week and the man who always comes late. It is written that He saw the multitudes and was moved in Himself before He said one word to anybody, and I am looking at one whole face today.
- Fear that my warmth was only ever a system, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God promised a heart of flesh where the stone was, and the Holy Spirit is doing that work in me, so the gift under the habit is being woken up and not thrown out.
- Lord, You are the God whose insides turn over at the sight of tired people, and You are handing me back my eyes one name at a time. I thank You, because Your Spirit is moved in me before I ever reach the door, and I am holding one name in front of You right now.
