She has sat in that seat since 1998 and there is not a person in that building who would sit in it, and none of that was ever arranged.
Front row, second seat in from the aisle on the left. Wednesday night. The organ, which is played by a man who has been playing it longer than she has been sitting there, and who plays the same four chords under the praying because he has always played them and nobody has ever asked him to stop. Maybe forty people. The kind of meeting where somebody prays out loud for a long time and nobody minds.
This is the hour of her week. She would say that plainly to anybody who asked.
And then, on a Wednesday, in the middle of it, something surfaces.
We are not going to describe it and I am not going to ask you what yours is. It surfaces. She was not thinking about anything of the kind. She was praying, actually praying, in a room she loves, with the organ going, and it arrived the way these things arrive, which is sideways and complete and out of nowhere.
And in the space of a breath she has reached a conclusion.
Not: that was unpleasant. Not even: I need help. What she concludes, kneeling in the front row on a Wednesday night with her elbows on the second seat, is that a woman to whom that happens in this room, at this moment, while the organ is playing, has no business sitting where she sits.
She stays until the end. She helps stack the chairs. And driving home she is already planning, in a low, practical way, to start sitting further back, gradually, so that nobody notices and nobody asks her about it.
And you know that seat. Something arrives that you did not choose and cannot get out, and the arrival is bad enough, and then within a breath you have used it to disqualify yourself from something you love, and the disqualifying did not feel like an attack. It felt like integrity.
So take this in before we go one step further, because I think you have braced for agreement. You are not disqualified from your own seat and you were not disqualified on Wednesday. Romans 7:20 has Paul making exactly this distinction about his own inside life, in the first person, in a letter God saw fit to keep, and the Holy Spirit is in that front row with you and is not embarrassed to be there.

What was given, and what was not
There is a line Paul wrote to a young man who was frightened, and the whole verse is a list of what has and has not been handed out.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7
Hath not given. Hath given. The whole sentence is about distribution. It is not a description of Timothy's character and it is not an instruction to go and produce three qualities. It is a statement about what has been issued and by whom.
And look at the third item on the list, because it is the one this article lives in. A sound mind. It is in the same list, under the same verb, as power and love. It is not presented as an achievement that some believers reach and others do not. It is listed as something God handed over, in the same breath and on the same terms as everything else in the sentence.
Which means a sound mind is not a state you have to be in to be admitted to a room. It is a gift that was already given to a woman who was kneeling in the front row on a Wednesday when something surfaced.
You have a sound mind, and it was given rather than earned, and it did not stop being yours on Wednesday. The written word puts it in the giving column and puts the giving in the finished past, which means it is not a status you lose when your head produces something unbidden; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that gift into a sanctuary with the chairs already stacked.
And notice who the letter is written to. Not to a man who was doing well. Paul is writing to somebody he has to tell not to be afraid, and he tells him what he has been given rather than what he ought to summon.
Why holy ground makes it worse
I want to be honest about why it landed so hard in that room, because if I pretend it should not have you will read your own reaction as further evidence, and it is not.
It landed hard because of where it happened. If it had come in a parking lot she would have moved along. It came while she was praying, with the organ going, in the middle of the best hour of her week, and the reasoning that followed was automatic and felt airtight: the setting proves the seriousness. If it can happen there, then it is not a passing thing, it is a fact about her that has now been demonstrated under the most favorable possible conditions.
That reasoning is wrong, and it is wrong in a specific way. A quiet, attentive, undefended hour is not a test chamber. It is simply the hour in which a person is least distracted, and least distracted means most able to notice, and noticing something is not the same as producing it.
You were not weak to reason that way, and it moved faster than you could have caught it. Isaiah 41:13 says I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee, and both the holding and the speaking are His actions in that sentence; His Spirit does that holding at whatever pace He keeps, and He is not evaluating how quickly you recover.
And there is a second half that needs plain speech, and it is the one that would cost her the most. The plan to move back a few rows was not humility. It looked exactly like humility, and it would have been received as humility by anybody who noticed, and that is what makes it so dangerous. It was a woman quietly removing herself from the place where she is most fed, on the authority of an accusation, and calling the removal modesty.
You are not being asked to move anywhere, and nobody with any standing has asked you to. Psalm 84:10 says a day in His courts is better than a thousand elsewhere, and the writer of it wanted the doorway rather than a seat further back; the same Spirit who put that longing in a person is the one who has kept you in that room every Wednesday since 1998.
And if what surfaced there is heavier than a page can hold, do not carry it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you do not have to be finished in front of.
Who benefits from the second seat being empty
Here is a question worth asking out loud, and it will sound blunt because it is meant to.
Who gains if you move back four rows.
Not the church. Not the forty people. Not the man at the organ who has played the same four chords under your praying for twenty-eight years. Not the women behind you who have, whether you know it or not, learned some of what they know about praying from the back of your head.
The plan had one beneficiary, and it is not God and it is not you, and once you say it in those terms the whole thing looks different than it looked in the car.
You are seated where you belong, and the belonging was never contingent on a quiet head. Scripture says God has given us a sound mind, and a gift is not repossessed on the basis of what surfaces in the receiver; the Holy Spirit is the one who has held that second seat for you for twenty-eight years and did not vacate it on Wednesday.
So the front row is not a place you have to qualify for weekly. It is the second seat in from the aisle, and you have prayed in it since 1998, and something surfaced there once and it does not get to move you.
Here is what turns in this sanctuary. You took an arrival as a demonstration, and because it happened in the holiest hour of your week you treated the setting as proof, and then you did the thing a serious person does, which is to act on the finding. But the finding was not a finding. A quiet hour does not manufacture anything. It only removes the noise, and removing the noise is not a test.
You have a sound mind, given to you and still yours, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind, and every item in that list is in the column of things handed over rather than things reached; His Spirit is the one holding that gift in place in a room with the chairs stacked and the lights half off.
So you are not moving back. The second seat in from the aisle is yours, and it was not held on the condition of a quiet head, and the man at the organ will play those same four chords next Wednesday.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, and say them with your head up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own mind; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because something surfaced while the organ was playing. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the gift in it, never the strength of your own composure. Whether the arrivals get further apart is His to decide, and He is kind about the pace and He is not scoring you on it.
- Plan to move back four rows so that nobody notices and nobody asks, you looked like humility and you were a removal ordered by an accusation. It is written that God has given me a sound mind, and I am sitting in the second seat in from the aisle on Wednesday.
- Reasoning that says a thing which surfaces in a holy hour must therefore be a fact about me, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God says He holds my right hand and says fear not, I will help thee, and the Holy Spirit is doing that holding, so a quiet room is not a test chamber and never was.
- Lord, You are the God who hands out power and love and a sound mind and does not take them back at the door. I thank You, because Your Spirit has kept that seat for me since 1998 and did not vacate it on Wednesday, and I have one line written in the front of my Bible before I need it.
