A Renewed MindIsaiah 26:3

The Weather Is Not the House

This message is for the woman in the alto line at Wednesday choir practice who lost her place mid-hymn because something she never chose to keep surfaced in her head, and who now stands there with the sheet music shaking, certain that what arrived is who she really is

The pianist takes them back to bar twelve for the third time, and the altos groan the way altos do, and the woman second from the end finds the bar with her finger and breathes in on the upbeat like everybody else.

She loves this. Wednesday nights, the hall that smells of floor polish and the urn, the sopranos being told off for rushing, the tenor who is always three seconds behind and unbothered by it. She sings because in this room she is a voice among voices, and nobody needs anything from her but the note. It is the one place in her week where her head goes quiet.

And then, halfway through the second verse, it arrives. She did not call it. She did not go looking. Something she never chose to keep and cannot get out simply walks into her mind the way a stranger walks into a room, and her voice goes on for two beats without her and then stops. The sheet music is shaking a little. The woman beside her, kind, not looking, taps the bar with a pencil so she can find her place. She finds it. She sings. And under the singing a sentence forms, very cold and very sure: there it is. That is what is really in you.

By the time they get to the last verse she has said it to herself four times, and the hymn is about grace, and she cannot hear it.

You know that bar twelve. Yours might be a line, a prayer, a moment with your children, a morning that was going well. Something arrives that you did not invite and would give a great deal to be rid of, and the arriving itself feels like a verdict, as if the fact that it can walk in proves it lives there. I am not going to describe what arrives, for you or for her, and I am not going to ask you to. I want you to know that I know that room from the inside, and that I am going to stand next to you in the alto line for a while before we say anything about it.

The Weather Is Not the House

What arrives is not what lives there

Let me say the plainest thing first, because everything else depends on it. A thing that arrives in your mind uninvited is not a thing you did. It came. You did not fetch it. And the sentence that follows it in, the one that says there it is, that is the real you, is not a discovery. It is an accusation, and it has been made by something that does not love you.

Here is the pit, and I am going to name it gently. The mind keeps things. It keeps them without asking, it keeps things you were shown before you were old enough to refuse, it keeps things that were done to you and things you walked into, and it does not sort them by whose fault they were. Then it hands them back at the worst possible moment, in a hymn, in a line, and because it is your own head doing the handing, it feels like your own self speaking. That is the wound. Not the memory. The way the memory arrives wearing your face.

You have the mind of Christ, and that is a possession and not a performance. I am not offering that as a nice thought. It is written, in the plainest words Paul had, we have the mind of Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it true in a head that has just been ambushed in the second verse.

Now hear the difference between two things, because the accusation depends on you not hearing it. There is what surfaces, and there is what you are. A memory surfacing is weather. It moves through, it is loud, it can soak you to the skin, and it tells you nothing about the house it blew through. Who you are is the house. And Scripture does not say the house is defined by what the wind brings in. It says the house has a Keeper.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.Isaiah 26:3

Read the shape of that. It does not say the mind that never has anything blow through it. It says the mind that is stayed on Him, leaning on Him, held against Him the way you lean on a wall in the wind, and He keeps that mind. Not you. He. The verb belongs to God. Your part is where the leaning goes, and even that He helps with. You are kept in peace by the One who holds your mind, and the peace is His to give and not yours to manufacture. That is written in Isaiah and it is the Spirit's work to make an old line true in a church hall on a Wednesday.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that becomes a technique, and it is not that. I am not going to give you a method for keeping things out. I do not have one, and the people who sell them are selling something the Scriptures never promised. What Scripture describes is not a wall you build. It is a peace that guards. Paul wrote to Philippi that the peace of God, which passes understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Guard is a soldier's word. The peace stands at the door of your mind like a sentry. It does not promise that nothing will ever come up the road. It promises Who is on the door.

And this is the part where I have to say something to the reader whose surfacing thing was done to them. If what arrives is a wound and not a choice, if it is something you were shown or made to be part of, then hear me: you were never a participant in that. It is not sin surfacing. It is injury surfacing, and injury needs a real person alongside it, someone safe, and I will not pretend a page can be that. Find one. But even before you do, the same sentence stands over you: you are not what arrived, and it does not get to name you. The word of God calls you His, and the Spirit who groans with what has no words is groaning with you.

You were not given a mind so that it could be your enemy, and its keeping was never left to you alone. Scripture says be transformed by the renewing of your mind, and the verb is passive: be renewed, be transformed. Somebody else is doing it. The Holy Spirit is the one renewing, and a memory arriving in the second verse is not evidence that He has stopped.

And now the part I owe you about your mouth. This does not change by you fighting the thing harder in silence, and it does not change by you analyzing where it came from. Jesus said that faith no bigger than a crotchet on the sheet music can speak to a mountain and see it move. Speak. Your mountain has a shape and it stood next to you in the alto line: the sentence that says what arrived is what you are. You have the standing to answer it out loud, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls you a new creation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say further than the sound of your own voice under a hymn.

And if what surfaces has gone heavier than a page can carry, do not sit with it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can be with you without needing to analyze it. If it has gone somewhere darker than tired, do not wait: in the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a person will answer.

The breakthrough

Something can settle in you now, and it is not that nothing will ever surface again. I cannot promise that, and anybody who does is lying to you kindly. It is that the surfacing stops being a verdict.

You are held, mind and all, by the One who keeps in perfect peace, and what arrives does not get to name you. That is not a feeling I am asking you to work up with the sheet music still shaking. It is written into Isaiah and Philippians and it is the Spirit's work to make a written thing land in a head that has been ambushed. When the weather comes and how often is not mine to schedule, and I say that plainly rather than leaving you to hope I meant something bigger. What I can say without any hedge is that the weather is not the house. The house is His. And He is on the door.

So the next time it walks in, in the line or in the second verse, it does not find you defenceless and it does not find you alone. It finds you with a line already in your mouth.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the car after practice, in the kitchen, wherever your voice will come. Not because the words are a lock and your mind is a door. Because you are in Christ, and the standing to name what is true over your own head has been given to you, and it was given before anything ever surfaced. What God does with the years ahead, how often the weather comes and how quiet the room gets, is His to decide, and a good Keeper is allowed to keep a mind in ways I would not have chosen. What is not up for decision is who holds it. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than your voice, so let Him.

  1. Thing that surfaced in the second verse, you are weather and not the house, and you do not get to tell me my name. It is written that God keeps in perfect peace the mind that is stayed on Him, and He is the one holding this one.
  2. Cold sentence that says this is what I am, get out of my alto line, in the name of Jesus. The Spirit is renewing my mind, and I am not the one who was ever going to do that alone.
  3. Lord, You keep me in perfect peace, and the keeping is Yours and not mine, as it is written. I have the mind of Christ, and I am finding my place in the bar and singing.
