A Renewed MindRomans 8:6

Window Two, Mid-Transaction

This message is for the bank teller at window two who has something surface while she is counting out four hundred dollars in front of a customer, who must keep her face and finish the count correctly, and who has come to believe that being able to do that means she is a person with two selves and neither of them is honest

Four hundred dollars, and the man wants it in twenties, and she is on the third bundle.

Window two. Twelve years. She counts the way she was taught, which is out loud and in fives, and she counts it twice, and she has never once been over or under at the end of a day. There is a woman two windows down who has, twice, and everybody knows it, and that is the sort of thing that follows a person in a small branch.

The man is fine. He is a regular. He is telling her about a truck he is thinking of buying.

And something surfaces.

We are not going to describe it and I am not going to ask you what yours is. It surfaces, sideways and complete and out of nowhere, at nine minutes past two on a Thursday, with four hundred dollars in her hands and a man across the counter talking about a truck.

And she keeps counting.

That is the whole event, from the outside. She finishes the third bundle. She counts it twice. She hands it across, and she says something about the truck that is exactly right, and he laughs, and he leaves, and the drawer balances at the end of the day the way it always does.

And here is the conclusion she has come to over about four years of that, and she has never said it out loud to a soul.

There are two of me and neither one is real.

Because how does a person do that. How does a woman have that going on behind her face and still count out four hundred dollars correctly and make a joke about a truck. Either the woman at the window is fake, or the thing behind her face is fake, and both of those are unbearable, so she has landed somewhere worse: that she is a competent performance with nothing genuine underneath it, and that the competence is the proof.

And you know that window. Something arrives that you did not choose, and you are in the middle of your job or your family or a conversation, and you hold it, and you hold it well, and then the holding gets used as evidence against you.

So take this in before we go one more step, because I think you have already braced for the verdict. You are not two people and you have not been performing for four years. 2 Corinthians 12:9 has God telling a man that His strength is made perfect in weakness, which is a sentence about what runs underneath a person rather than what shows on them, and the Holy Spirit is standing at window two with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

Window Two, Mid-Transaction

Aimed at, not filled with

There is a sentence in Romans about the mind that is usually read as a description of two kinds of people, and read closely it is about direction.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.Romans 8:6

The phrase behind minded is about what the mind is set on, what it inclines toward, what it is aimed at. It is not an inventory word. Paul is not describing what is in a person's head; he is describing which way the head is facing.

That distinction is the whole of this article. Because a woman who believes that spiritually minded means a head with nothing wrong in it will look at what happened at nine minutes past two and conclude that she is not one, and she will be conducting an audit of her contents for the rest of her life and losing it every time.

But contents were never the measure. Aim was. And a woman can be aimed at God with her hands full of twenties and something going on behind her face, and the aim is not canceled by the something.

You are spiritually minded in the sense the verse actually means, and the contents were never the test. The written word uses a direction word rather than an inventory word, which means what surfaced at your window has no bearing on which way you are facing; and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds the aim steady, in a branch, on a Thursday, in the middle of a count.

And look at what is promised on the far side of it. Life and peace. Not a cleared head. Peace is offered to a person who has a head like everybody else's and is aimed the right way, which is the only kind of peace that would be any use to anybody in a working life.

Composure is not a performance

I want to take apart the conclusion, because it is the load-bearing wall and it is doing you real damage.

You concluded that competence in that moment proves you are a performance. Turn that around and look at what you are actually saying. You are saying that a genuine person would have dropped the money.

But think about who else does what you did. A surgeon whose father is dying finishes the operation. A mother whose whole world came apart that morning makes the lunches. A man gets word at work and finishes the shift because there are people counting on him. Nobody looks at any of those and says: fraud. Everybody looks at those and says: that is what a person is made of.

Composure under pressure is not the opposite of authenticity. It is one of the more expensive things a human being can do, and it costs something every time, and it is not a lie.

You were never performing, and what you did at that window is what integrity looks like from the outside. Psalm 40:2 says He brought me up out of an horrible pit and set my feet upon a rock and established my goings, and the establishing is His work on somebody who was in the pit; His Spirit does that establishing at whatever pace He keeps, and He is not auditing your face.

And there is a second half, and it is the one that costs. There is a real loneliness in being good at holding it. Because you hold it so well, nobody has ever asked, and after four years the not-being-asked starts to feel like proof that there is nothing in you worth asking about.

You are not being asked to stop being able to do your job, and nobody is prescribing that you fall apart to prove you are real. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to them that are of a broken heart, which locates Him rather than instructing you; the same Spirit doing that drawing near is the one who has stood at that window with you for twelve years.

And if what is behind your face at nine minutes past two is heavier than a page can hold, do not carry it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you do not have to be composed in front of.

One woman, aimed

Here is the thing that actually resolves the two-of-me problem, and it is not a technique.

You are not two people. You are one woman, standing at one window, who had something arrive that she did not send for, and who did her job correctly, and who was aimed at God the entire time even though nothing in the minute felt like it.

That is one person. That is one person doing a hard thing well.

The split was never real. It was an explanation you reached for because nobody had ever told you that a person's head is not their heart, and that what surfaces in the one has no authority to report on the other.

You are one person and you have been the whole time, and what surfaces cannot testify about you. Scripture says to be spiritually minded is life and peace, and it puts peace on the far side of aim rather than on the far side of a clean inventory; the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding a woman together at a counter for twelve years without her noticing.

So window two is not a stage. It is a counter with a drawer that has never been over or under, and a woman who counts in fives out loud, and something surfaced there once and did not get to say who she is.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns at this window. You used your own competence as evidence against yourself, and it is the cruelest possible use of the best thing about you. Holding it together while something is going on is not a performance and it is not a split. It is what a whole person does under load, and it costs, and the cost is not a debt, it is a price you have been paying quietly for four years without anybody thanking you for it.

You are one woman, aimed at God, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that to be spiritually minded is life and peace, and minded there is a word about direction rather than about contents; His Spirit is the one keeping that aim steady while your hands count out four hundred dollars in twenties.

So there are not two of you. There is one of you, and she counts in fives out loud, and her drawer has never been over or under in twelve years, and something surfaced behind her face on a Thursday and did not make her a liar.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, and say them with your chin up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own mind; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because something surfaced at nine minutes past two. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the aim in it, never the strength of your own composure. Whether the arrivals get further apart is His to decide, and He is kind about the pace and He is not scoring your face.

  1. Conclusion that there are two of me and neither one is real, you took the best thing about me and used it as evidence, and you are being set down. It is written that to be spiritually minded is life and peace, and minded is about which way I face and not about what shows up in me.
  2. Loneliness of being so good at holding it that nobody has ever once asked, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God says He is near to the brokenhearted, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing at this window, so I am asked after by the One whose asking counts, and I always have been.
  3. Lord, You are the God whose strength is made perfect in weakness, which is a sentence about what runs underneath a person and not what shows on her. I thank You, because Your Spirit has held me together at a counter for twelve years without my noticing, and I have one line in my bag before I need it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
