What I Found Out About My Dad

She was looking for a charger. That is the whole of it. She was looking for a charger about six weeks ago and she found something out about her dad instead.

She is fifteen.

And what has happened since is that a fifteen-year-old has quietly taken on a job that nobody gave her and nobody knows about.

She manages the dinner table now. She watches her mother's face during certain conversations and steers away from certain subjects, smoothly, the way you would if you had been doing it for years, and she has only been doing it for six weeks. She is careful about which room she is in. When her dad drives her to school she has a list of things to talk about that are safe, and she runs it, and he thinks they are getting on well, and in a strange way they are.

She has told nobody. Not her mother, obviously, and she has thought about that one until she feels sick. Not her best friend, because her best friend would tell one person and that person would tell one person. Not anybody at church, because her family is known there. Not a teacher, because she does not know what a teacher would have to do with it.

So a fifteen-year-old is running a household's emotional weather by herself, six weeks in, and getting up for school every morning, and nobody in her life has any idea.

And she has decided that this is her job now. Not in so many words. Nobody sat her down. But somewhere in the six weeks it became understood, by her, that the peace of that house is her responsibility, and that if it goes wrong it will be because she was not careful enough.

And if you are reading this and you are the one who found out, hear this first, because it matters more than anything else on this page. It is not your job. You did not take it on. It landed on you while you were looking for a charger, and you were fifteen, and none of the weight you have been carrying was ever assigned to you by anybody with the authority to assign it.

So take this in before we go a step further. You are not responsible for holding that house together and you never were. Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and the whole sentence is about who does the helping, and the Holy Spirit is in your room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

Present means at hand

There is a line at the top of the forty-sixth psalm that everybody has heard, and one word in it is doing far more work than it looks.

A very present help. Present there does not mean God is aware of the situation. It is not about being informed. The sense underneath it is found, at hand, available, right there where the thing is happening. It is the word you would use about a person who is actually in the room rather than one who has been notified.

And notice what the verse says God is. Refuge, strength, help. All three are things somebody does for another person who cannot do them for themselves. There is nothing in that sentence describing what the person in trouble is supposed to bring.

Which is the whole point for somebody your age. You have been operating as though you are the refuge. As though you are the strength of that house, and the help, and the one holding the weather steady. And you are fifteen, and the verse names somebody else in every one of those three roles, and He is in that kitchen at dinner and in that car on the way to school.

You are not the one holding that house up, and Somebody who is has been in the room the whole time. The written word puts refuge and strength and help all on God and asks nothing of the person in trouble, which means the job you took on six weeks ago was never open; and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that helping, at a dinner table, on a school run, in a bedroom at eleven at night.

And read the next verse if you get a chance. It talks about the earth being removed and the mountains being carried into the sea, which is a way of saying: even if the most permanent-looking things you know come apart. Even then.

Why it became your job so fast

I want to explain what happened to you, because you probably think you chose it.

You did not choose it. What happened is that a young person who finds out something about a parent is handed a piece of adult information without any of the adult things that are supposed to come with it: no context, nobody to ask, no ability to do anything about it, and no permission to mention it.

And a mind in that position does the only thing available, which is to take control of the one variable it can reach. You cannot fix anything, so you manage. You watch faces. You steer conversations. You become responsible for the atmosphere because the atmosphere is the only thing in the whole situation that answers to you.

That is not you being dramatic and it is not you being a control freak. It is a fifteen-year-old doing something intelligent with an impossible situation, and it has cost you six weeks of being fifteen.

You were not weak and you were not foolish, and what you did was the only move on the board. Psalm 68:5 says God is a father of the fatherless and a judge of the widows in his holy habitation, which is a verse about God taking personal responsibility for people whose protection is not working; His Spirit does that at whatever pace He keeps and He is not grading how well you have managed dinner.

And there is a second thing, and I want to be very careful and very clear about it. This page is not going to tell you to go and tell your mother. It is not going to tell you to confront your dad, or to keep quiet, or to do anything at all with what you know. That belongs to you and it is not a stranger's to schedule, and anybody who tells a fifteen-year-old from a distance what to do inside their own family is being careless with your life.

What I will say is this: carrying it entirely alone is not the same as keeping it private. You can talk to somebody safe about what you are carrying without handing over your family. A school counselor. A youth pastor. A doctor. An aunt. A helpline where nobody knows your name. You are allowed to be helped without telling anybody anything about anybody else.

You are allowed help without giving anything away, and those are two separate things. Psalm 27:10 says when my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up, and it names the closest bond there is and says what God does on the far side of it; the same Spirit who had that written is the one who has been getting you up for school for six weeks.

And I mean this plainly: if the nights are getting heavy, if you are having thoughts about hurting yourself, tell somebody today. In the United States you can call or text 988, any hour, and a real person will answer, and you do not have to explain your family to them.

Six weeks is a long time to be fifteen

Here is what I want to leave with you, and it is not a plan.

You have been doing an adult's job with a fifteen-year-old's equipment, in secret, since the day you were looking for a charger. And you have done it well, which is the part that worries me most, because doing it well is exactly what has kept anybody from noticing.

You are allowed to put it down. Not the knowledge, which you cannot put down. The job. The responsibility for the peace of that house, which was never yours, which nobody gave you, and which you have been carrying because there was nobody else in the room and you did not know that there was.

You are able to set the job down without setting anybody down, and the two were never the same. Scripture says God is a very present help in trouble, and present means in the room rather than informed; the Holy Spirit is the one who has been at that dinner table every night for six weeks doing the job you thought was yours.

So the house is not on you. There is a girl in it who is fifteen and who found something out while she was looking for a charger, and somebody in every room of it who is refuge and strength and help, and none of those three words has ever had her name on it.
