Not AlonePsalm 55:22

My Brother, and the Thing I Now Know

This message is for the man who found out something about his younger brother two weeks before the family's big Sunday dinner, who is now the only person at a table of nineteen who knows, and who has to pass a dish to somebody he loves while holding something the whole room would come apart over

Nineteen people. Three tables pushed together and covered with two cloths because there is no single cloth in the family big enough.

His mother is at one end. His aunt is telling the story about the car, which she tells every year and which nobody would stop her telling. There are four children under the table doing something that will end in tears. Somebody's boyfriend is here for the first time and is being magnificent about it.

And his brother is across from him passing the rice.

Two weeks ago he found something out about that man. Nobody else at this table knows. Not their mother, who is eleven feet away asking whether anybody wants more. Not his own wife, who is beside him and who he tells everything, and who he has not told this. Not the brother himself, who does not know that anybody knows.

So he is nineteen people deep in a family dinner, holding a thing that would take this entire table apart, and he is being asked whether he wants more rice.

He says yes. He always says yes. His brother laughs at something their uncle says and the laugh is the same laugh it has been since 1994, and that is the hardest part of the whole afternoon, that nothing about the man across the table is different, and everything about the room is.

He has been through all of it in two weeks. Whether telling anyone would help anybody or only redistribute the weight. Whether not telling is loyalty or complicity. Whether his mother would survive it and whether it is his to decide what she survives. Whether a man who says nothing for a year becomes a different kind of man.

And underneath all of it, the thing he cannot put down: he loves him. That is not in question and has never once been in question, and somehow that is what makes it so heavy, because if he did not love him this would be simple.

And you know that table. You found out about somebody, and now you are the only one in a room who knows, and every ordinary thing in that room, the rice, the story about the car, a laugh from 1994, is being carried past you at a weight nobody else can feel.

So take this in before we go a step further, because there is another hour of this dinner. You are not the only one at that table who knows. Psalm 139:2 says thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off, which is a description of somebody already inside the situation, and the Holy Spirit is at that table with you and is not embarrassed to be there.

My Brother, and the Thing I Now Know

Sustain is about the middle, not the end

There is a line in the fifty-fifth psalm that is usually offered as though it promised removal, and what it actually promises is better and stranger.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

Sustain. The word underneath it carries the sense of holding up, propping, supplying somebody so they can keep standing. It is what you do for a person under a load. It is not what you do to a load.

And that distinction is everything for a man at a family table. Because you have been reading verses like that one as offers to take the situation away, and then noticing that the situation has not gone anywhere, and quietly concluding that either the verse is not for you or you have not cast properly.

Neither. The promise was never that the weight leaves. It is that the person under it is held up. Those are two entirely different promises and only one of them is any use at a table of nineteen where nothing can change today.

You are being held up under it, and the holding does not require the situation to move. The written word promises sustaining rather than removal, which means nothing about the last two weeks is evidence that this has failed; and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that propping, at a table, under strung lights, while the rice goes round.

And look at where that psalm comes from. The verses just before it are about betrayal by somebody close, somebody the writer had gone to the house of God with. It is not a general psalm about hard times. It is written by a man in exactly this kind of trouble, and he still writes down the word sustain.

Silence is not complicity

I want to address the accusation directly, because you have been carrying it for two weeks and it has no business being there.

You have wondered whether saying nothing makes you complicit. It does not. Complicity requires participation, and what you are doing is holding information you did not seek, about an adult whose life is his own, while you work out what love actually requires. That is not collusion. That is a man being careful with somebody else's life, which is the opposite of the thing you are accusing yourself of.

And the timeline matters. You are two weeks in. Two weeks is not a year. A man who has taken two weeks to think about something that could dismantle his mother's life is not a coward, he is a serious person, and the accusation is arriving because you are tired and because there is nobody to check it against.

You were not colluding, and taking time with this is what care looks like from the inside. Proverbs 17:17 says a friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity, and the second half of that verse locates a brother precisely in the hard season rather than in the easy one; His Spirit is the one holding you steady in it, and He is not timing your decision.

And here is what this page will not do. It will not tell you to speak to him. It will not tell you to tell your mother. It will not tell you to say nothing. Not this week, not by Christmas, not on any schedule at all. That is yours, and it involves three or four people this page has never met, and a stranger handing you a deadline in writing would be doing something reckless with your family.

You are not under instruction here, and no one has the standing to set a date for you. Psalm 55:17 says evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice, which describes somebody going back repeatedly rather than resolving it once; the same Spirit who had that written is the one who has kept you at this table being kind for two hours.

And I will say this plainly. Two weeks is long enough to be the only person on earth carrying this. Find one real person this week who is not at that table: a counselor, a pastor, a friend from another part of your life. You do not have to name your brother. I found out something about somebody in my family and I have nowhere to put it is complete and honest and names nobody. If it gets darker than tired, do not wait. In the United States you can call or text 988 and a person will answer.

What is available before the dessert comes out

Here is what is actually on the table this afternoon, and it is smaller than what you have been trying to solve.

Not a decision about your brother. You are two weeks in and sitting at a family dinner, which is the single worst place on earth to reach a conclusion about anything.

Not a conversation with your mother.

What is available is one true sentence about yourself, said out loud, later, when you are alone, and the name of one person outside this family who will know by the end of the week that you are carrying something. That is the whole assignment. It is deliberately small, because a man who has been alone with something for two weeks needs a first act he can actually perform, and everything larger belongs to a different month.

You have something the right size for today, and it does not require you to have decided anything. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee, and casting is one motion rather than a resolution; the Holy Spirit is the one who has been propping up a man at a table for two hours while he passed dishes.

So the table is not a place where you are alone with something. It is nineteen people and two cloths, and a brother who is still your brother, and somebody at that table who has known since before you did.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns at this table. You have been trying to work out what to do, at a family dinner, two weeks in, with nobody to check anything against, and you have been reading your own silence as a moral position when it is simply the state of a man who is still thinking. And underneath it you have been quietly waiting for the weight to lift, and taking its not lifting as evidence that you are on your own.

You are being held up in the middle of it, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that He shall sustain thee, and sustaining is what is done to a person under a load rather than to the load itself; His Spirit is the one who has been propping you up since the first dish went round.

So nothing has to be decided before dessert. There are nineteen people at this table and one of them knows, and there is Somebody else here who has known longer than you have and has not left the table once.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud tonight, when the house is quiet. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from at that table; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because you have said nothing for two weeks. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the sustaining in it, never the strength of your own steadiness. What happens with your brother and your mother is not this page's to say and it is not yours to force; how it unfolds is His to decide, and He is kind about it.

  1. Two weeks of being the only person at a table of nineteen who knows, you are not complicity and you are not cowardice, you are a man taking care with somebody else's life. It is written that He sustains, and sustaining is done to the one under the load and not to the load.
  2. Accusation that a man who says nothing becomes a different kind of man, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. Scripture says a brother is born for adversity, and the Holy Spirit is holding that over me, so loving him in a hard season is the whole job and I am doing it.
  3. Lord, You are the God who props a man up in the middle of a load rather than promising to lift it off him this afternoon. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been at that table since before the first dish went round and has known longer than I have, and I am saying one true thing out loud tonight and one name outside this family.
