The Laundry Chute at County General

This message is for the woman working the laundry shift in a hospital basement at five in the morning, nine days after finding out about her husband, who has found that the only place she can bear to be is a room with a machine loud enough to cover what is happening on her face

The chute comes down from six floors and the sound it makes is not one sound, it is a series of soft collapses, and she has learned to tell from the sound roughly what is coming.

Basement level. Five in the morning. Two industrial machines, one dryer that has needed a part since March, a stack of carts, and a fluorescent tube at the far end that flickers in a way maintenance has stopped promising to fix.

She has worked here eleven years and she has never once volunteered for this shift.

She volunteered for it three times in the last nine days.

Nine days ago she found something out about her husband. And what has happened since is that she has quietly rearranged her life around being in rooms where nobody can see her face, and this basement is the best one in the building. The machines are loud. There is nobody down here between four and six. And there is a physical job to do with her hands that does not require her to say a single word to a living soul.

Her supervisor thinks she is being helpful. Two people have thanked her.

And she stands at the chute at five in the morning sorting what comes down, and she cries sometimes, and the machines cover it, and at six she washes her face at the utility sink and goes up and is completely fine.

Here is the part she has started to notice and does not like. She has begun to dread the end of the shift. Not the shift. The end of it. Because at six she has to go up into a building with windows in it, and after that she has to go home, and somewhere in the last nine days five in the morning in a basement has become the only hour she can breathe in.

And you know that basement. You found out about somebody you love, and instead of a plan you developed a shape: places you can be, hours you can manage, rooms with enough noise. Nobody would call it a strategy. It looks like a woman picking up extra shifts.

So take this in before we go a step further, because it is nearly six. You are not hiding from anybody who is looking for you, and you have not been alone in this basement once. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, which means a room with a flickering tube in it is not dim to God, and the Holy Spirit is down here with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The Laundry Chute at County General

Where that line actually sits

There is a verse about mercy that gets printed on things, and almost nobody who quotes it knows what it is sitting in the middle of.

Lamentations is five chapters of a man describing a ruined city and his own ruin with it, in detail, without flinching and without resolving it. The third chapter is the worst of them. He says he has been made to walk in darkness. He says his strength and his hope are perished. He says it plainly, at length, in the first person, and nobody edits it out.

And then, in the middle of that, this.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:23

That line was not written by somebody having a good year. It was not written after the situation improved. It sits between a man saying his hope has perished and a man saying the Lord is his portion, and it was composed by a person in the middle of the worst thing that ever happened to him.

Which is exactly why it can be handed to a woman in a basement on day nine.

You are met by a mercy that arrives on a schedule you do not run, and it does not wait for the situation to improve. The written word puts that promise inside a chapter of unresolved ruin rather than at the end of a story that worked out, which means it was designed for exactly where you are standing; and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it down a laundry chute at five in the morning.

And look at the word new. Not renewed, in the sense of an old thing patched. New. Which means yesterday's did not have to stretch, and tomorrow's is not being drawn on today.

The shape you built is not deceit

I want to name what you have been doing, because you have started to think of it as lying and it is not.

You have not been deceiving anybody. You have been managing an unmanageable load with the only tools available, which are hours, rooms and noise. When a person cannot control a situation, they control proximity to it, and you have been doing that with real skill for nine days. Volunteering for a basement shift is not dishonesty. It is triage.

The trouble is not that it is wrong. The trouble is that it works, and things that work do not get examined, and the cost of this one is that the only hour you can breathe in is now at five in the morning in a room with a broken light in it.

You were not deceiving anybody, and what you built was the only move available to you. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, and both halves describe what He declines to do to somebody barely holding; His Spirit is doing that not-breaking at whatever pace He keeps, and He is not evaluating how well you washed your face at six.

And here is the second thing, and I am going to be exact about it. Nothing on this page is going to tell you what to do about your marriage. Not stay, not go, not forgive on any schedule, not confront him before the weekend. That belongs to you and to God and to however long it takes, and anybody who hands a woman a timetable for that from a distance is being careless with a life.

You are not being instructed here, and nobody has the standing to set your dates. Psalm 55:22 says cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee, and sustaining is an ongoing action taken on somebody who is still carrying the circumstances; the same Spirit doing that sustaining is the one who has been in this basement for nine days.

And I will not soften this. Nine days of arranging a life around rooms nobody can see you in is enough. Find one real person this week, and it does not have to be anybody from this hospital or that church: a counselor, a doctor, a pastor two towns over. You do not have to name him. I am carrying something I cannot talk about and I am not sleeping is a complete sentence and enough to get somebody help. If it gets darker than tired, do not wait for a shift to end. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, including five in the morning, and a person will answer.

Six o'clock arrives whether or not you are ready

Here is what I want to put in your hands before the shift ends, and it is small.

You have been dreading six o'clock because six o'clock means going up into a building with windows. But six o'clock is also the thing the verse is about. Mercies are new every morning, and mornings are not optional, and the one arriving in about eleven minutes was not issued on the basis of how the last nine days went.

You do not have to feel ready for it. There is nothing in that verse about readiness. It is a delivery, on a schedule somebody else keeps, to a man who had just written down that his hope had perished.

You are receiving something at six o'clock that you did not have to be ready for. Scripture says they are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness, and the faithfulness named there is His rather than the faithfulness of the person receiving it; the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you standing at a chute for nine days and got you up the stairs every time.

So the basement is not a hiding place. It is a room with two machines and a flickering tube and a woman doing honest work in it, and somebody with her who does not need the lights fixed to see her.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this basement. You built a shape out of hours and rooms and noise, and it has been working, and the price of it is that your life has contracted to one hour before dawn in the only room in a hospital where nobody can see your face. That was never a plan. It was triage, and triage is meant to hold somebody until real help arrives, and it was never meant to become the arrangement.

You are met by mercy that is new this morning, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that they are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness, and the man who wrote it had just finished saying that his own hope had perished; His Spirit is the one who has come down this chute at five in the morning for nine days running.

So six o'clock is not the end of the only hour you can breathe in. It is a delivery you did not have to be ready for, arriving in about eleven minutes, on a schedule that has never once depended on how your week went.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, over the machines. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from down here; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because you have arranged nine days around not being seen. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the mercy in it, never the strength of your own composure. What happens in your marriage is not this page's to say and it is not yours to settle this week; how it unfolds is His to decide, and He is kind about it.

  1. Shape I have built out of hours and rooms and noise, you are triage and you were never meant to be the arrangement, and you are being set down. It is written that His mercies are new every morning, and the one arriving at six was not issued on the basis of how my nine days went.
  2. Dread of the end of this shift, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee, and the Holy Spirit is doing that sustaining, so I am going up those stairs held and not on my own strength.
  3. Lord, You are the God whose faithfulness is great and whose mercies do not have to be stretched from yesterday. I thank You, because Your Spirit has come down this chute at five in the morning for nine days running, and I am saying one true thing out loud before I go up and one name I will tell.
