Made On Purpose1 Corinthians 6:20

The Headshot for the Application

This message is for the young woman on her twelfth attempt at a photograph for an application, who has been sitting in front of a blank wall for an hour and a half trying to produce a version of herself that will be approved, and who understands somewhere around take nine that she is not choosing a picture, she is auditioning for permission to exist in the file

Her phone is propped against a stack of books on a chair, and she has been sitting in front of a blank wall for an hour and thirty-five minutes.

The application needs a photograph. That is all. One photograph, professional, head and shoulders, and there is a note in the guidelines about it being recent. It is not a modeling job. It is not a public role. It is a form field with a size limit on it.

She has taken a hundred and forty pictures.

Take one through take five she was still being sensible about it. Somewhere around take twenty she moved the chair for the light. At take sixty she changed her shirt. There was a stretch in the eighties where she stopped looking at the pictures between shots because it was faster.

And somewhere around take ninety, sitting on a kitchen chair in front of a blank wall with her arms aching from holding a smile, she understood what she was actually doing. She was not selecting a photograph. She was trying to produce a version of herself that would be allowed through. She was auditioning. And she could not have told you who the panel was, only that they existed and that she had been performing for them for a very long time.

She is twenty-six. She has a degree and a good reference and eleven months of relevant experience and she has read the guidelines four times and nowhere in them does it say anything about being approved of.

And here is the part she noticed last and it was the worst one: she was not trying to look good. She had gone past that around take forty. By ninety she was trying to look like somebody who would not be a problem.

And you know that wall. Somebody handed you a valuation before you were old enough to decline it, and it did not stay in the room where it was handed over. It set up a panel, and the panel does not meet anywhere, and it has never once returned a verdict, and you have been submitting to it for years.

Take this in before we go one line further, because I think you have already braced to be told you are overthinking it. You are not overthinking this and you are not vain. Psalm 139:14 says you are fearfully and wonderfully made and it says it as a settled fact rather than as a compliment, and the Holy Spirit is sitting in this room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The Headshot for the Application

What a price says, and about whom

There is a short sentence in a letter to Corinth that gets used as a scolding and is not a scolding, and read properly it is one of the most freeing lines in the book.

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.1 Corinthians 6:20

Bought with a price. Now think about what a price actually reports. A price never describes the item; it describes what the buyer was willing to give. Two people can pay wildly different amounts for the same thing and the difference is not in the thing, it is in them.

So the price is a statement about God. It says nothing about whether you photographed well that year. It says what He was prepared to spend, and He spent everything, and He did it in full view without negotiating and without waiting to see how you would turn out.

You were bought at full price, and nothing about that transaction is under review. The written word says bought in the completed past tense and then says which are God's, which is a statement of present ownership rather than a proposal; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that finished buying into a room with a phone propped on a stack of books.

And notice the therefore. Glorify God in your body. Not: get your body approved. Not: produce an acceptable version. The instruction that follows it assumes the body is already His and already fine to be used, which is the exact opposite of an audition.

Why the panel never returns a verdict

I want to be honest about why this is so hard to stop, because if I pretend a person should simply be able to decide not to audition you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.

The panel cannot return a verdict, and that is not a flaw in it, that is what it is for. A real judgment can be passed and then it is over. This one is a permanent process, and a process does not end, it only pauses, and every new photograph reopens it.

That is why a hundred and forty pictures did not settle anything. Take one hundred and forty-one would not have either. There is no image that closes an open question, because the question was never really about an image.

You were not weak to start auditioning, and you were young when the panel was seated. Romans 8:15 says you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but the Spirit of adoption, and adoption is a legal word about a status somebody else confers and you cannot lose by underperforming; His Spirit is the one carrying that status, and He is not timing your progress.

And there is a second half. Auditioning has worked. It has kept you employed and liked and out of certain kinds of trouble, and there is a genuine fear in setting down a strategy that has been delivering results since you were a teenager, even when the cost of running it has quietly gotten enormous.

You are not being asked to stop trying at anything, and nobody is grading this. Luke 12:7 says the very hairs of your head are all numbered, which is a detail so small it is almost comic and is exactly the point: He is not assessing the general impression; the same Spirit doing that counting is the one who stopped you at take ninety.

And if what came up in front of that wall is heavier than a page can hold, do not sit with it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you can say one true sentence in front of.

The size limit is the whole brief

Here is what I want to hand you, and it is almost too plain.

Go and read the guidelines again. They say recent, head and shoulders, under a certain file size. That is the entire requirement. Whoever wrote that line has never met you and is not going to think about your photograph for more than four seconds, and their four seconds have nothing to do with the hour and thirty-five minutes.

The panel is not in the guidelines. The panel is not at the company. The panel does not have an address.

You have already been received, and the receiving was settled before the form existed. Scripture says ye are bought with a price and your body and spirit are God's, and ownership is not something the owner keeps reconsidering; the Holy Spirit is the one who is closing a hearing that was never a real hearing, in a room, in front of a blank wall, at nine o'clock at night.

So the photograph is not an audition. It is a form field with a size limit. And take four was fine. It was fine at the time and it is still on the phone.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this room. You have been trying to win a hearing, and you cannot, and you have concluded that you need a better photograph. You do not need a better photograph. You need the hearing to be over, and the only way a hearing ends is if somebody with actual authority closes it, and that has already happened and you were not in the room when it did.

You are bought and owned and settled right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that you are bought with a price and that your body and your spirit are God's, and the price was paid in full and in public with no clause about how you would photograph; His Spirit is the one holding that closed verdict over a kitchen chair in front of a blank wall.

So the panel is dismissed. It never had standing and it never returned a verdict and it is not going to, and you have been submitting to a body that does not exist. And you have a photograph. Take four. Attach it and send the application.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, and say them with your head up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own worth; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because a panel was seated in you years ago by somebody who has forgotten it. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the settling in it, never the strength of your own conviction. The price was not set by anything about you and cannot be revised by anything about you. How fast this reaches every form field you fill in is His to decide, and He is kind about the pace.

  1. Panel I have been submitting to since I was a teenager, you have no address and you have never returned a verdict, and you are dismissed. It is written that I was bought with a price and that my body and my spirit are God's, and I am attaching take four and sending the application.
  2. Fear that I have to produce a version of myself that will not be a problem, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God gave me the Spirit of adoption and not a spirit of bondage to fear, and the Holy Spirit carries that status for me, so I am not auditioning for a place I already hold.
  3. Lord, You are the God who paid in full and in public before I had turned out any way at all. I thank You, because Your Spirit closed a hearing I could never have won and I was not even in the room, and I am standing at a mirror tonight to say who I belong to.
