Made On PurposeJeremiah 1:5

The Coach's Ranking Sheet

This message is for the man who was ranked fourth on a clipboard at fifteen and has organized twenty years around never being fourth at anything again, who finds the sheet in a box while helping his mother move and discovers that the coach's handwriting still has authority over him that no adult has ever been given since

He is forty-two and he is helping his mother pack up the house, and he has just found it at the bottom of a box of school things.

A single sheet, folded in four, gone soft at the creases. Ruled columns. Twenty-odd names in a hand he would know anywhere. And beside each name, a number, in the same hand.

His name is fourth.

That is all it is. A coach's working sheet from a season that ended twenty-seven years ago, made by a man who was probably doing his best with a group of fifteen-year-olds and who has been dead for a decade. It was not a verdict on a human being. It was a note about a depth chart for a sport this man has not played since.

And he is standing in his mother's kitchen with a coffee going cold and his hands are not steady.

Because here is what he knows, standing there, and has never said out loud to a living soul: he has organized about twenty years of his life around not being fourth. Not consciously. Not as a plan. But the shape is unmistakable once you see it. The jobs he took and the ones he would not take. The thing he does in a meeting when somebody else's idea is better. The reason he has never gone back to that town for a reunion. The particular way his stomach goes when his own son is chosen or not chosen for something.

Twenty-seven years, and a man he cannot picture clearly wrote a numeral next to his name on a Tuesday afternoon and has been giving him instructions ever since.

And you know that sheet. Somebody put a valuation on you before you were old enough to decline it, and the strange thing about that kind is not the pain of it. It is the authority. No adult in your life since has ever been permitted that much say over you, and you have never once granted it deliberately.

Take this in before we go one line further, because I think you have already braced to be told to let it go. You are not a man who failed to move on and you are not thin-skinned. Psalm 139:16 says His eyes saw your substance yet being unperfect and every one of your days was written down before there were any of them, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this kitchen with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The Coach's Ranking Sheet

Known before there was anybody to rank

There is a sentence God says to a young man who is in the middle of trying to disqualify himself, and it does something no clipboard has ever been able to do.

Jeremiah's objection is the ordinary one. I am a child. I cannot speak. It is an assessment, and it is not unreasonable, and it is delivered in the language of someone who has been measured before and knows where he came out.

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.Jeremiah 1:5

Read the timestamps. Before I formed thee. Before thou camest forth. Both of the decisive verbs happen before the man exists, which means neither of them can be adjusted by anything that happens to him afterward.

That is not encouragement. That is jurisdiction. A ranking made in a gym in a particular October is a measurement taken inside a life. What God says in that verse was settled before the life started, and things settled before a life started are not open to revision by things that happen during it.

You were known and named before anybody had a name to write down, and no clipboard reaches back that far. The written word puts the knowing and the setting apart both in the finished past and both before birth, which places them outside the reach of every measurement ever taken of you; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that jurisdiction into a kitchen full of boxes on a Saturday.

And notice what God does not do with Jeremiah's objection. He does not argue that the young man is actually quite eloquent. He does not offer a counter-assessment. He changes which court is sitting.

Why a number outlives the man who wrote it

I want to be honest about why this has lasted twenty-seven years, because if I pretend a grown man should have shaken this off you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.

A number is portable and a sentence is not. If the coach had said something cruel, you would have remembered the tone and the day and eventually the cruelty would have dated itself. A numeral does not date. It has no tone. It reads exactly the same in 1999 and today, and because it is stripped of everything human it arrives looking like a fact rather than like a man's working opinion on a Tuesday.

That is the whole trick of it. He did not tell you what you were. He wrote down a figure, and figures do not sound like opinions.

You were not weak to take it in, and you were fifteen and it was written in ink by an adult. Isaiah 44:21 says thou shalt not be forgotten of me, and it is stated as a settled property of God rather than as a reassurance about your memorability; His Spirit carries that remembering at His own pace and does not ask you to earn a minute of it.

And there is a second half, and it is the one that costs. Being fourth built you. The work you did, the discipline, the refusal to be outworked, some of the very best things about you came out of a determination that started on that sheet. So this is not a simple matter of throwing away a lie. You would be throwing away an engine.

You are not being asked to give up anything you built, and nobody is auditing your motives. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a verse about a God who does not expect a person to be sturdier than He made them; the same Spirit doing that remembering is the one who put a box in front of you in your mother's kitchen.

And if what came out of that box is heavier than a page can hold, do not sit with it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you can say one true sentence in front of.

Whose handwriting has authority

Here is the question that will actually move something, and it is not about the number.

It is: who gave that man jurisdiction, and who has renewed it every year since.

Nobody appointed him. He was a coach with a clipboard and a season to organize and twenty-odd boys to sort into an order for the purposes of a game. He did not think he was ruling on a soul. He would be appalled. And he has been dead ten years and the authority has not lapsed, which means the authority is not coming from him anymore. It is being renewed from somewhere else.

And it can be withdrawn. Not by force, and not by deciding to feel differently about a piece of paper, but by a court with better standing sitting on the matter.

You are under a jurisdiction that was established before you were formed, and it has never been transferred. Scripture says before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee and before thou camest forth I sanctified thee, and He said it to a man who had just entered a lower assessment of himself into evidence; the Holy Spirit is the one convening the higher court, in a kitchen, over a folded piece of paper.

So the sheet is not a verdict. It is a working document from a season that ended twenty-seven years ago, made by a tired man doing an ordinary job. And you were known before he was born too.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in this kitchen. You have been trying to stop caring about a number, and you cannot, and you have taken that as evidence of something weak in you. It is not weakness. You cannot stop caring about a ruling by deciding to; a ruling is only ever overturned by a higher court, and you have been trying to do with willpower what only jurisdiction can do.

You are known and set apart from before you were formed, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and it was said to somebody who had just submitted a lower assessment of himself in evidence; His Spirit is the one holding the earlier ruling over a folded sheet of paper in a box of school things.

So the clipboard is dismissed. It was a working document about a depth chart and it never had standing over a man's life, and the hand that wrote it has been gone for ten years. And you are forty-two, and your mother is in the next room, and there is a whole afternoon of boxes left to do.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, and say them with your head up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own worth; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because a numeral was written beside your name when you were fifteen. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the jurisdiction in it, never the strength of your own resolve. A coach with a clipboard was never appointed to rule on anybody. How fast this reaches twenty-seven years of arrangements is His to decide, and He is kind about the pace.

  1. Sheet of paper with a number beside my name, you were a working document about a depth chart and you never had standing over a life. It is written that God knew me before He formed me and set me apart before I came out of the womb, and I am not taking instructions from you today.
  2. Arrangement I have run for twenty years so that I am never fourth at anything again, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God said be not afraid of their faces, for I am with thee to deliver thee, and the Holy Spirit is doing that delivering, so the engine can go and the man can stay.
  3. Lord, You are the God who knew me and named me before there was anybody around to write anything down. I thank You, because Your Spirit convenes an earlier court than any gym in any October, and I am standing at a mirror tonight to say who I belong to.
