The Wall of Graduation Photographs

The reunion is in the gym and he has been standing in the hallway for eleven minutes looking at a wall he had forgotten existed.

Every graduating class, framed, going back further than anybody at this reunion was alive. His year is at eye level, which is either a coincidence or the worst possible arrangement. Six rows of faces in the same rented gowns, and under each face a name, and beside the name, in the yearbook style of that era, three or four words.

Under his: a phrase somebody chose for him in the spring of his senior year. It is not cruel. It is not even inaccurate. It is a small summary, the kind a yearbook committee produces in an afternoon, and it was almost certainly written by a girl he barely knew who had forty of these to get through before Friday.

He is forty-eight years old and he can feel his neck getting hot.

And standing there, in a hallway, with the music going in the gym, he does the arithmetic he has been avoiding for a long time. Every significant decision he has made since he was twenty has been positioned against that phrase. The career he chose, partly to prove it right. The one he left, partly to prove it wrong. The way he introduces himself at parties. The thing he does when somebody assumes something about him, which is to correct them slightly too fast.

Thirty years of arguing with three or four words written by a seventeen-year-old with a deadline.

And the thing that finally gets him is not that it was unfair. It is that he has never once simply ignored it. He has agreed with it and he has fought it and he has hidden from it, and in every one of those he was answering it. It has had his attention continuously since 1996 and it does not know he exists.

And you know that wall. Somebody wrote a description of you before you were old enough to decline it, and the trap in that kind is not that it is wrong. It is that arguing with it and agreeing with it are the same activity, and both of them keep it in charge.

Take this in before we go one line further, because I think you have already braced to be told you should be over this. You are not petty and thirty years is not too long to have carried something. Psalm 139:16 says His eyes saw your substance and all your days were written in His book before there were any of them, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this hallway with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

Called by a name, made for a purpose

There is a verse in Isaiah where God describes a people, and the striking thing about it is how completely the description belongs to the one giving it.

Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.Isaiah 43:7

Read the verbs and notice who owns every single one. Called by My name. I have created him. For My glory. I have formed him. I have made him. Five acts and the subject is God in all five, and there is no clause anywhere in the sentence describing a quality the person contributed.

Now hold that against a yearbook caption, which is a description generated by an outside observer on the basis of surface evidence gathered over a school year and written in an afternoon.

They are both descriptions of a person written by somebody else. That is the whole comparison, and it is not close, and the only thing that has ever been in question is which one you are answering.

You are called by His name and made for His purposes, and that description was entered before any yearbook committee met. The written word puts all five verbs on God and leaves the person contributing nothing to the description, which is exactly what makes it a thing you cannot argue with or fall short of; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that older description into a school hallway on a Saturday night.

And notice that the repetition is deliberate. Created, formed, made. Three words for the same act, stacked, the way you say a thing three times when you want it to be unmistakable and not merely heard.

Why arguing keeps it in charge

I want to be honest about why this has run for thirty years, because if I pretend a grown man should have shrugged this off you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.

There is no exit from a description while you are still responding to it. Agreeing with it keeps it authoritative. Disproving it keeps it authoritative, and worse, it hands the thing your entire agenda, because now every choice has to be measured against whether it counts as a rebuttal.

That is why thirty years of very hard work has not produced freedom. You were not underachieving at the escape. You were sprinting in a room where all the doors are the same door.

You were not vain to take it in, and you were seventeen and it was framed and hung on a wall. Isaiah 44:21 says thou shalt not be forgotten of me, and it is stated as a property of God rather than as an assessment of how memorable you are; His Spirit carries that remembering at whatever pace He sets and asks nothing of you to qualify.

And there is a second half. The argument has been productive. A great deal of what you have built came out of the energy of proving something, and there is a real and unspoken fear in setting down a motor that has been running everything since you were twenty, even when you can see what it has cost.

You are not being asked to unbuild anything, and nobody is auditing your motives. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a verse about a God who does not expect a person to be more durable than He made them; the same Spirit doing that remembering is the one who stopped you in a hallway for eleven minutes.

And if what came up in front of that wall is heavier than a page can hold, do not carry it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you can say one true sentence in front of.

The third option

Here is what he had never considered, standing in that hallway, and it took him thirty years to get to it.

There is a third thing you can do with a description, and it is not agreeing and it is not disputing. It is being described by somebody else instead.

Not thinking better of yourself. Not writing your own caption, which is just the same committee with a new chairman. Being described. Receiving an account of yourself from a source with actual standing, and letting that be the account, and letting the yearbook be what it always was, which is three or four words written by a girl with forty to do before Friday.

You have already been described by the only voice with standing, and the description is on record. Scripture says I have created him for my glory, I have formed him, yea, I have made him, and it is a description written by the Maker rather than an assessment made by an observer; the Holy Spirit is the one who is ending a thirty-year correspondence with a wall.

So the caption is not a verdict and it is not a slander. It is a small piece of writing produced under deadline by a seventeen-year-old who has almost certainly forgotten it. And there is a reunion happening in the gym, and there are people in there who would be glad to see you.
