He is forty-one and he is standing in front of a hotel mirror doing his collar for the third time, and he has just worked out that he has been doing this since he was twelve.
It is a cousin's wedding. It is not his day and nobody is going to be looking at him and he knows both of those things. And he is still standing here, adjusting a collar that was correct two adjustments ago, running the same check he has run in every mirror in twenty-nine years without ever once having named it.
The naming happens because of a sentence he has not thought about in a long time. He is twelve, and there is a room full of relatives, and an aunt says the thing she always said, cheerfully, meaning nothing by it, meaning it as a compliment, meaning it as a way of dividing four children up so each of them had something: she's the clever one, he's the funny one, and this one, this one is the good-looking one.
That was all. Nobody was cruel. Everybody laughed and it was a nice afternoon.
And he has spent twenty-nine years being the good-looking one, which sounds like a soft assignment and is not. It means the whole ledger runs on a thing that has a shelf life. It means every year is a small subtraction. It means he has never quite believed that the room would keep him if the ledger ever came up short, and he has never said that out loud to a living soul, including the woman he married.
He gets the collar right. He goes down. It is a good wedding.
But at some point during it, standing with a plate in his hand while an uncle tells him a story he has heard before, he catches himself doing the arithmetic on how he is landing in the room. And he thinks: I was twelve. Somebody set a price on me and I was twelve, and I have been paying it in installments ever since, and I never agreed to any of it.
And you know that mirror. Somebody handed you a valuation before you were old enough to decline it. It may have been kind, it may have been careless, it may have been much worse than either, and it does not matter which, because a price set on a child gets carried like a fact and not like an opinion. And this week you caught yourself doing the arithmetic again, and you did not expect to still be paying.
Take this in before we go one line further, because I think you have already braced for a lecture. You are not vain and you have not wasted twenty-nine years. Psalm 139:14 says you are fearfully and wonderfully made and it says it as a settled fact rather than as encouragement, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this room with you and is not embarrassed to be here.

The word underneath workmanship
There is a sentence in the letter to Ephesus that people quote in the wrong direction, and getting it the right way round is the whole business of this article.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10
Workmanship. The Greek word underneath it is the word a craftsman uses about a finished piece he is pleased with, and it is the root of our word poem. It is not a word about function. It is a word about a made thing that the maker looks at with satisfaction, the way a man looks at a table he built.
Now watch the order in the sentence, because the order is everything. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, and only then unto good works. The making comes first. The pleasure of the maker comes first. Everything the made thing does comes afterward, and it comes as an outflow and never as a payment.
You are a made thing that a Maker was pleased with, and that happened before you did one single thing. The written word puts the workmanship in the past tense and finished, which means it is not a rating that can be revised as your face changes; and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that finished verdict into a hotel room with a mirror in it.
And notice what the sentence does not do. It does not grade. There is no comparative anywhere in it. Nobody in that verse is the good-looking one.
What an installed price actually does
I want to be honest about why this is hard to shake, because if I pretend a valuation like that should just fall off when you learn better you will read your own difficulty as failure, and it is not.
A price installed in childhood does not sit in the part of you that argues. It sits underneath the arguing, in the part that decides how a room feels before you have consciously assessed anything. That is why twenty-nine years of knowing better has not moved it. You have been correcting a belief that was never held as a belief in the first place. It was handed to you as a description of reality by people you had no reason to doubt, at an age when doubting them was not an available move.
You were not weak to have taken it in, and you were a child when it was set. Zechariah 2:8 has God calling His people the apple of His eye, which is an image about the part of the body a person protects without deciding to, and His Spirit is the one doing that protecting now at whatever pace He chooses.
And there is a second half that matters more. A valuation like that is not only a burden. It is also a career. Being the good-looking one worked. It got you attention, and rooms, and a certain kind of ease, and there is a real and unspoken fear in setting down a thing that has been paying out for twenty-nine years, even when the payments are getting smaller.
You are not being asked to throw anything away, and nobody is standing over you with a bill. Isaiah 46:4 promised that even to old age and gray hairs He carries and delivers, and the promise puts the carrying on His side for the entire length of a life; the same Spirit doing that carrying is the one who stopped a man at a wedding with a plate in his hand.
And if what came loose in you today is heavier than a page can hold, do not sit with it alone. Find a real person this week, one who can sit with you without needing to fix a thing, and let them be somebody you can say one true sentence in front of.
The ledger nobody is keeping
Here is the part that took him the longest to believe, and it may take you a while too.
There is no ledger. Not a merciful ledger, not a generous ledger. There is no account anywhere in heaven in which your face is an asset that is depreciating. The whole framework, the four children each assigned a quality, the annual subtraction, the quiet fear of coming up short, is a structure that was built in a living room in about four seconds by an aunt who was being nice, and God has never once operated inside it.
You are held by a Maker who does not run an inventory, and you were never on one. Scripture says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, and a poem is not audited; the Holy Spirit is the one who is dismantling a ledger that was never real, gently, and without making you look at every entry on the way out.
So the mirror is not a scale. It is a piece of glass in a hotel room, and the man in it is somebody God made on purpose and was pleased with before an aunt ever opened her mouth. And the collar was fine two adjustments ago.
Here is what turns in this room. You have been trying to argue yourself out of a price, and it has not worked, and you have quietly concluded that the failure is yours. It is not. You cannot argue your way out of a valuation, because it was never installed by an argument. It has to be outranked.
You are outranked already, right now, as you read this, and that is a report and not a wish. It is written that you are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, and that verdict was entered before an aunt ever divided four children into qualities in a living room; His Spirit is the one holding the Maker's verdict over the family's, in a hotel room, at a wedding, wherever a mirror is asking you for the arithmetic again.
So you are not the good-looking one. You are not the clever one or the funny one either. You are somebody God made on purpose and was pleased with, and He has never revised it and He is not going to. And the collar is fine. Go down to the wedding.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, and say them looking up. Christ is in you, and that is the standing you speak from over your own worth; the authority is His, and it does not lapse because somebody set a price on you when you were twelve. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the weight in it, never the force of your own conviction. Nobody in that living room had the authority to rank you and God has never once used their scale. How quickly this reaches the part of you that decides how a room feels is His to decide, and He is gentle about the pace.
- Price set on me when I was twelve, you were spoken by people who meant no harm and you were never a valuation anybody had the right to make. It is written that I am God's workmanship, made and finished and pleasing to the One who made me, and I am not paying installments on you today.
- Fear that the room keeps me only while the ledger holds up, you are named and you are refused in the name of Jesus. God promised to carry me to gray hairs and to deliver me, and the Holy Spirit is doing that carrying, so I am held by a Maker who keeps no inventory.
- Lord, You are the God who was pleased with me before I did one thing, and You have never revised it. I thank You, because Your Spirit outranks every scale I was measured on as a child, and I am standing in front of a mirror tonight to say who I belong to.
